In its first season, each episode had two phases; the first phase was an audition. Contestants performed individually or as part of a group before four judges looking for vocal ability and stage presence.
Of thousands of applicants, they selected only thirty for further competition. These thirty semi-finalists were further reduced to fourteen finalists: Six solo artists, six groups, and two wildcards.
The second phase comprised performances by these finalists until viewers determined who would become Nigerian Idol.
