Hobbs made the announcement that she would be running for Arizona Secretary of State on March 8th, 2017. The battle took place during the 2018 elections, and her opponent was a local businessman named Steve Gaynor.
On election night, November 6, 2018, the Associated Press incorrectly declared Gaynor the winner of the contest, despite the fact that there were still 600,000 ballots to count across the state.
Given the close nature of the race, neither Hobbs nor Gaynor initially declared themselves the winner. In the days that followed, Gaynor’s advantage began to dwindle as an increasing number of votes were tabulated.
On November 16, 2018, it was officially announced that Hobbs had prevailed over her opponent Kari Lane by a margin of around 20,000 votes.
