Famous Mexican actor Sergio Calderon, who is most known for his role in movies like The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Men In Black, and The Ruins, passed away this morning.
His spokesperson confirmed the news regarding his death. The death of Sergio Calderon has put an end to his six-decade-long career as an actor.
According to the statement and confirmation given by Calderon’s spokesperson, he was surrounded by his family and his beloved ones during his death.
The actual reason behind Calderon’s death has not been revealed yet but it is believed that he passed away due to old age. Sergio Calderon was 77 years old at the time of his death.
Originally from Mexico, it was the simple role that he played in the hit American movie Men In Black that made Sergio Calderon more popular and recognizable.
Calderon appeared in the movie’s opening scene where the government officials come across a van of Mexican immigrants and stop to check the van as one of the immigrants in the van was not who they are.
The ‘head on a stick’ that was used by the character alien Mikey in the movie was actually played by Calderon. Even though the role was a simple and small one, it went on to help Calderon and the role became the calling card for many of his roles from then on.
Almost a week before his death, Sergio Calderon gave an interview to The LA Times, and in his interview, he said that he really loved to play those types of characters because people really hated him through those roles. He has stated that there were instances when people actually told him on the streets about how much they hated him.
Unlike most others who might take it as a wrong sign, Calderon said that those responses were his success. According to him, people hating was a clear sign that he convinced his audience what the movie wanted with the character and that was a sign of a job well done for him.
Just like his appearance in the movie Men in Black, another memorable role played by Sergio Calderon is the one that he did in the 2007 hit movie The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End starring Johnny Depp. In the movie, Sergio played the role of pirate lord Captain Valleneuva of the Adriatic Sea.
During the time of the movie’s filming, Calderon posted photos from the location of him along with actors like Johnny Depp who played the lead role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and actor Keith Richards, who played the role of Pirate lord of Madagascar and also the father of Johnny Depp in the movie.
Sergio Calderon was born on July 21, 1945, in Mexico and he had been active in the field of acting as a professional actor since the 1970s. Sergio made his entry into the field as a professional actor through the movie Bridge in the Jungle.
Popular director/actor John Huston played the lead role in the movie, which was based on the novel by B. Traven. Sergio was a student at the Instituto Andres Soler of the Association Nacional de Actores in Mexico. It was while being a student there Sergio was selected for his role in the movie.
Around 13 years after the project, Calderon worked with Huston in the classic Under the Volcano. In the movie, Sergio Calderon played the role of a cruel murderer At the same time, Calerdon also appeared in different projects on television too.

Apart from his most notable appearances in movies like Men in Black and The Pirates of the Caribbean, Calderon has also starred in multiple projects all throughout his six decades-long career.
Apart from director Huston, he has also worked along with different other notable personalities like Serio Leone, Ron Howard, R. Mann, Luis Puenzo, and many others.
Along with working with great directors, Calderon has also worked with some of the best actors in the field like Peter Falk and Alan Arkin (The In-Laws), Gregory Peck, Jane Fonda, Jimmy Smits(Old Gringo), Anthony Quinn(Children of Sanchez), Robert Mitchum, James Coburn and Rod Steiger (Duck, you Sucker).
Following the popularity that he gained through his iconic roles, Sergio Calderon was active in the field until the time of his death. He was a part of some of the hit projects in recent years too.
Most recently, the actor played a role in the 2008 natural horror film The Ruins which was directed by Carter Smith. He also appeared in recent works like Little Fockers and also in the hit FX series Better Things. Sergio also played a role in an episode of Peacock’s The Resort.
Even though the actor had been part of some of the hit movies of the times, the iconic role played by him in Men in Black and Pirates of the Caribbean will always stick with people and even though he is no more, Sergio Calderon will be remembered for the iconic roles that he played in his movies.
