The U.S. witnessed an increase in the COVID- 19 positively tested cases after the holiday season. According to the reports, there is a rise of 28 % in hospitalizations caused by COVID – 19 and a rise of 40 % in the pandemic test positivity rate.
The state of Illinois witnessed a total of the highest number of single- day COVID- 19 cases since the summertime. Reports from San Francisco and Boston show the high presence of Covid virus in wastewater.
The tracking of virus levels in wastewater is a measure to monitor the presence of viruses in the community. By these reports, it could be analyzed that the spread of the virus is becoming more widespread. The continuing season of holidays to Christmas and New Year is estimated to increase the already present rise in positive cases and hospitalizations.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) responded on Monday that a concerning development is seen in the COVID- 19 surge. This is concerning because the maximum capacity of the hospitals is already in an over- exhausted condition due to the epidemic levels of the flu and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
She said that the rise happens to be especially worrisome as the nation is in progress to the winter months which causes people to remain indoors with less ventilation. She added that the scenario would be more concerning as the upcoming holiday season would involve the gathering of a large number of people including the elderly and the children.
Elderly people are at high risk for severe outcomes from all respiratory illnesses circulating at high levels in the fall. Adult hospitalizations are on a hike in the following weeks, where in the last two weeks it rose from 15 % to 20 %.
The current conditions present in the U.S. are referred to by the term, tripledemic, by specialist personnel. It is because of the persisting conditions of the flu and the RSV along with COVID -19.
The flu in the U.S. has caused about 80,000 hospitalizations, 9 million tested positives, and 4,500 demises.
Walensky also pressed the importance of getting vaccinated ahead of the holiday season. It is reported safe to get simultaneously vaccinated for the flu and the Omicron booster.
Nancy Foster, representing the American Hospital Association, viewed that the hospitals are expecting the COVID- 19 patients outnumbering the flu and RSV patients by a period of two weeks.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Chief Medical Advisor to The President of the U.S. hopes that, by the combining of those who are infected, boosted, and vaccinated; with those who have not been infected yet but are vaccinated and boosted, does not have the potential of surging the pandemic level to an alarming level. He was representing the White House in a briefing session for the public and media.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts forward a number of precautions to be followed. This includes measures such as improving the usage of masks in order to protect yourself as well as others.
Getting updated with vaccinations and booster doses without falling back in time could be wise. Reportedly, vaccinated people have more immunity than those who remain unvaccinated resulting, in cases 3 times, and in death for 6 times.
