T-Mobile Data Breached Again, Will Customers Be Compensated

The American telecom company T-Mobiles made the announcement on Thursday, January 19, 2023, in which they confirmed the news of a recent hack in the company’s database. The report says that the private details of around 37 million customers had been compromised.

The company also added that the hack was fixed within 4 hours after its detection, They believe that the hacker was not able to infiltrate the rest of their system, which holds sensitive information about their customers like their social security and financial details.

As per the reports, the company has admitted that the attack had begun quite some time before, around November 25, 2022.

According to sources, the data that was hacked included information like the name, address, email, phone number, account number, and date of birth of their customers. Personal details of almost 37 million people had been compromised through the cyber track.

Even though the extent of the attack is very broad, it was relaxing to know that the hacker was not able to access sensitive information about the users like their social security number, tax information, or any finance-related information.

T-Mobile Data Breach

As this information is believed to have not been subjected to a breach, the company has made it clear that the finances and accounts of their customers were not at risk.

The company has officially released a statement after the breach in which they have stated that they understand that the incident will have an impact on their customers and that the company regrets that such an unfortunate incident has occurred.

They also added that, like most companies that operate in the market today, T-Mobile is also not immune to such criminal cyber-attacks and will make a continuous effort to increase its cyber security wing. The company is currently concerned with informing people who have their information breached.

Even though the company has posted an announcement regarding the information breach online, the posted message does not mention the number of affected customers or any information regarding the date of the attack.

The complete information regarding the number and more details about the incident which explains its extent was obtained from a filing submitted by the company to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on January 19, 2023.

T Mobile had been subjected to data breaches in the past too and the company had been advised to pay a sum of $35 million as a settlement. It is said that the company had agreed to pay the money for settling the case that took place in 2021.

It is a very similar event that has happened again and this time too, people have the right to claim compensation from the company as it’s their personal information that has been compromised.

If the final verdict demands that the company pay a sum as compensation to the affected customers, then T-Mobile is left with no choice but to pay it.

Similar Incidents From The Past

Breach of customer information from their devices is not a new event for T-Mobiles. The company has faced similar situations multiple times in the past. Among such incidents, the most recent one other than the one in 2022 took place in August 2021.

In a similar fashion, outside sources were able to breach into the database of T-Mobile and were able to get hold of their customer’s information like their name, address, and PINs.  In a similar manner to the recent issue, T-Mobile did not give the correct number of the affected customers then too.

The number given by T-Mobile to the public was just 850,000 white the court filing by the company clearly depicted the number of affected customers were around 76.6 million.

According to the reports available, the company has tracked down previous and present customers of T Mobile and the final number is finalized to be around 76 million. The final hearing regarding the case is supposed to take place on January 20 when the final decision regarding the $350 settlement will be announced.

If the company is ordered to pay the sum as a settlement, it will be the second-largest data breach compensation in the United States after the settlement by Equifax. The company paid a sum of $700 million as a settlement for a similar incident where the personal entails of almost 147 million people were compromised due to the company’s inefficiency in managing the details.

The case of the data breach had been constantly haunting T-Mobile for some of the past years.

The company has reported similar incidents on different occasions. The company claimed to set aside a sum of $150 million for improving its cyber security after the data breach in 2022 but outsiders were able to infiltrate the site again and collect valuable data of the American citizen.

As the latest hack has just been spotted, nothing much about the legal proceedings or the consequences of the incident is clear as of now. It is expected to be unveiled in the coming days and we will keep you posted on the latest information.
