Prior to the book’s release on January 10, interest in it surged. This was due to the several high-profile interviews Harry gave to promote the book. It was also because the book’s material had already been leaked when media outlets were able to get illicit copies.

Harry has received both criticism and support for some statements and anecdotes in the book, including the account of physical assault by Prince William in 2019, his history of drug use, the loss of his virginity, and the assertation that he killed 25 Taliban fighters during his tours of duty in Afghanistan with the British Armed Forces.

The popular American author and conservative commentator Candace Owens have a history of criticizing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. She has previously compared Meghan Markle to disgraced journalist Martin Bashir in response to the coupe’s Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan.

On the Spare was released, Owen used her eponymous podcast to deliver her review of the book, but she was honest enough to tell the listeners that she hadn’t read Prince Harry’s book. She paid someone to read it so that she don’t need to read the book.

Candace Owens’ review of the book was unsurprisingly unfavorable, with a particular point of disagreement. The major complaint she had was that in the book, Harry eliminated the amount of mystique that the public desired to surround the royal family.

Owens said that the royal family was something that they wanted to believe was unattainable, and superior to them. The royal family was an enigmatic secret to them. She added that she believes that the parts of this book are below what Kim Kardashian would ever publicize.

Owen continued by labeling the prince ‘despicable’ for collaborating with the media to promote his book after denouncing it. She added that there is a specific place in hell set aside for individuals like Prince Harry.

Bethenny Frankel

The American businesswoman, author, and television star, Bethenny Frankel, is another person who frequently comments on media about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s lives. She has criticized Meghan’s archetypes podcast and referred to the couples Netflix docuseries as a ‘Smash-and-grab job for money.

The royal was criticized by Frankel on her TikTok account after the publication of the contents of Spare become public, which included Harry’s description of getting a frostbitten penis at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

Frankel asked her millions of followers that is it too late to rename Harry’s book to Dirty Harry Laundry.

Stephen Colbert

During Harry’s promotional tour for the book Spare, late-night host Stephen Colbert had the chance to interview Harry in front of a  studio audience. They covered a wide range of topics including Harry’s time in the army and William’s dramatic battle.

Colbert referred to Spare as an intimate memoir in the interview, calling it fascinating and a pretty nice read. The two talked about some of the issues raised by the book’s release, specifically the criticism of Harry’s revelation that he killed 25 Taliban fighters during tours of duty in Afghanistan.

The royal spoke with Colbert about how the British media misreported the context of the comet and the larger book.

The American television anchor criticized Harry for going into detail about an alleged violent altercation with his brother. He said that everyone has a family and no one is going to publicize everything in the family.

He felt improper and impolite of Harry for publicizing the family matters. He asked what the point of Harry disclosing the dirty matters in a family.

James Haskell

While a lot of celebrities have condemned Harry’s memoir, others have defended him for expressing the truth and putting an end to the untrue rumors that have been spread about him throughout his life in the media.

Mike Tindall, Harry’s cousin-in-law, and retired professional rugby player James Haskell joined Piers Morgan’s chat show to defend Spare.

James Haskell said that it is a rare chance to get to tell your story without a journalist interviewing you. He added that it is a chance for Harry to speak about what he has felt regardless of what happened.

Haskell said that the people in his position never take a chance to tell their stories as he has done. Haskel defended Harry by telling that even if the story is right or wrong, it is the version of Harry’s memoir.
