Jonathan Crews was discovered mysteriously dead in his bed on February 2, 2014, with a gunshot wound to the heart in his Apartment in Coppell, Texas. Brenda Lazaro, Crew’s girlfriend for three months, who was present when the incident took place, told police that Jonathan shot himself to show how much he loved her.
However, Crew’s family was unconvinced by Lazaro’s explanation and began their own inquiry into the incident when police were unable to establish if the man was murdered or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to his family, the girlfriend doubted that Crews was ending their relationship since she had given him the option of choosing either Emily or her. That’s why she shot him.
Jonathan Crew’s mysterious gunshot death was covered on this week’s Behind Door 813 episode of NBC Dateline. The brand-new episode was aired on April 7, 2023, at 9:00 pm ET.
Who Was Jonathan Crews?
Jonathan Crews was a Texas native, born as one of the three children of Pam and John Crews. His father, John Crews was a lawyer, while his mother Pam was a housewife.
While visiting his grandfather in Montana, the 27-year-old learned how to shoot a pistol, and he even had his very own SIG Sauer 9 millimeter.
He developed into a tall, gangly teenager and played bass guitar and listened to such bands. He was laid back and reserved around strangers, smiling briefly.

Jonathan Crews had resided in Coppell, Texas, and was a member of his community there. He was shot to death while in his bed at his Coppell flat. He was an extremely compassionate, considerate, and modest individual.
Prior to Crew’s death, he was dating Brenda Lazaro for three months. She was his coworker at the urgent care facility where he worked as operation director. Crews and Lazaro were students at Wu Yi Shaolin, a martial arts academy in Coppell and they met each other there.
The Untold Tale Of Jonathan Crew’s Mysterious Death
Brenda Lazaro called 911 on February 2, 2014, informing authorities that her boyfriend, Jonathan Crews, had shot himself in the heart.
According to reports, the ten-minute phone call was spent with Lazaro attempting to explain the circumstances surrounding the victim’s suicide. She claimed during the call that Crew shot himself as a sign of his love for her.
The call was placed that night at 11:30 pm. Jonathan Crews was discovered dead in his bed with linens covering him to his waist and a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest by the time paramedics reached his apartment. His body slouched to the left with both arms extended.
Crews were shot with his SIG Sauer 9 millimeter. The bullet entered through the right side of his back and exited onto the bed after passing through his heart, liver, and lungs. The weapon was discovered on top of the blanket adjacent to his body.
The only person present when the incident took place was Lazaro; she claimed Jonathan committed suicide in a misguided attempt to show his love for her. Officials asserted that they lacked enough proof to be certain of what took place. The autopsy of Crews revealed that the cause of the death was unknown.
During an investigation, it was discovered that Jonathan Crews had argued earlier that day with Brenda Lazaro about a woman named Emily. Later that night, Crews allegedly told her that he loved Lazaro and would prove his love for her before shooting himself in the chest.
Due to her friendship with Crews, Emily later claimed that Lazaro and Crews had a falling out. She also claimed that Lazaro had contacted her and yelled at her once for hugging Crews.
The night before he passed away, Crews sent Emily a strange text message in which he wrote he wanted to die. She attempted to hide her tracks and claimed that Lazaro was responsible for the murder.

Lazaro’s explanation about the incident didn’t satisfy Crew’s family, who thought that he would never try suicide and that the occurrence could not have been a mistake given his knowledge of firearm safety.
They also questioned why the right-handed 27-year-old could have shot himself on the left side with a powerful gun. His mother asserted that Lazaro murdered him because she was envious.
According to reports, the 911 phone call produced a troubling timeline showing that she phoned the authorities 30 minutes after her boyfriend Crews was shot and that she also skipped the burial.
The Crews family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Lazro in 2016, claiming that she killed Jonathan Crews.
Has Anyone Been Arrested For Crew’s Death?
Crew’s family appeared before the civil court in 2016 because they disagreed with the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s autopsy report. A Dallas County jury in September 2022 found that Lazaro most likely killed Jonathan Crews.
Even though Lazaro has never been charged related to Crews’ death, his family was successful in their civil case in September 2022. The jury determined that Crews was most likely murdered by Brenda Lazaro in 2014. The family of Crews received $206 million as compensation for the death.
