A TV journalist has been brutally killed while reporting during a shooting spree in Florida on February 23, leaving 3 killed and 2 injured.
The reporter, Dylan Lyons, who is just 24 years old, was at the scene to cover the fatal shooting of Nathacha Augustin, a lady in her 20s, in Pine Hills when the attacker opened fire at the crowd.
He was on behalf of Spectrum News 13, a local reporting channel. Although the day started with the hot news of the killing of a young woman, it ended with a few more names added to the list.
Apparently, the mysterious gunman who initially killed Ms. Augustin returned after a while to take the lives of Dylan Lyons and his co-workers. The notorious attacker further invaded a nearby home and fatally shot a nine-year-old T’yonna Major and also caused major harm to her mother.
Meanwhile, the police identified the dead bodies of Dylan as well as his colleague Jesse Walden, who also became a victim of the sudden criminal attack.
In a press conference conducted after the occurrence, Sheriff John Mina said it was unfortunate for a nine-year-old, a mother, and news professionals to become the victim of gun violence.
He further added that the motive behind the merciless act was unknown and it seems to be still unclear to the department as to whether the killer knew if the two he shot were journalists or not.
Mr. Mina concluded the meeting by asserting it had been a “horrible day.”
Immediately after the astounding incident, the Orange County authorities detained a teen suspect, Keith Melvin Moses, who they believe is behind the ruthless act. Currently, Moses is charged with murdering Ms. Augustin, who he was acquainted with. However, charges related to the other 2 murders and further attacks are yet to be followed.
As per the officials, the 19-year-old culprit is already blacklisted for crimes including assault with a deadly weapon, theft, and burglary. The media has also immediately taken his photo to different platforms to make people aware of such deadly humans.
Dylan’s biography states that the Philadelphia native joined the multimedia journalist last July after completing his University education in Florida, where he studied journalism and political science. It further adds that Dylan chose journalism due to his unmatched “desire to tell stories” that would possibly bring “an impact on the local communities.”
Dear and near ones of the ill-fated journalist are mourning the loss of Dylan, who according to Spectrum News 13 was a “motivated and talented” reporter, who was apparently “living his dream in Orlando.”
The tragic news has sent shockwaves to the entire Orlando community with condolences pouring in from various sources including state politicians, local law enforcement officials, and the state politicians.
“Our hearts go to the families of the reporters who were killed today as well as the entire Spectrum team,” tweeted Karine Jean-Pierre, the current White House Press Secretary.
Other Spectrum 3 officials were also seen asking prayers for the demised journalists who were murdered on Thursday.
Celeste Springer, one of the team members, further requested to mention all the other gun violence victims in the prayer.
According to his friend and co-worker, Josh Miller, Dylan was more passionate and “very serious” about his job as he “loved his career.”
Mr. Lyons’ sister, Rachel has apparently arranged a GoFundMe page on her social media handle to support her younger brother’s funeral expenses.
She further mentioned that Dylan, who was about to be 25 this March, was a “devoted son to his parents” and he also had immense love for his fiancee. She then said, “He (Dylan) was a happy soul,” and since he was the youngest in the family, they all considered him a “baby.” However, all she had to insist was that her brother “was taken too early.”
Ostensibly, Dylan was quite dedicated towards his work as the budding professional was even appreciated for his student-run news station anchoring. He initially landed as a journalist at WCJB TV20, which is an ABC affiliate.
In 2020, the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists awarded him the best Politics Series and Lyons was also a finalist for the investigation report in 2022.
According to his biography, one of the major stories he covered was about a homicide of a teen girl, which illustrated the significance of ensuring protection” to vulnerable beings in society.
His friends are still trying to process the news that Lyons who according to them was a ‘hero” is no more in the world, and most importantly, the profession, on which “he wanted to succeed” led him to death.
