The veteran investigative journalist, who used to work at CNN passed away on Saturday. His family confirmed the death news of the award-winning senior investigative correspondent.
Drew Griffin had been battling cancer for the past few years and the illness is the reason behind his demise. At the time of his death, he was 60 years old. The standard and means of his storytelling were unmatched, which set him apart from other journalists.
Throughout his journalism career, Drew has done his duty as a journalist to his viewers and also to the society that he serves.
Holding up the value and duty of his profession, Drew Griffin has held some big institutions and powerful people accountable for the actions they have committed.
After being aware of the news about the death of Drew, the CEO of CNN shared a piece of condolence news with the rest of his staff.
In the note, CEO Chris Licht mentioned that the death of Drew Griffin was a devastating loss, not only to CNN but also to the entire profession.
He also appreciated the great work that Drew carried out during his career at CNN and he mentioned that the work done by Drew Griffin had an incredible impact and also embodies the mission of the organization, CNN, in every possible way.
Drew Griffin had a career as an investigative journalist for almost two decades and during his career span, Drew worked on hundreds of stories and also some amazing documentaries. His contributions to the field of journalism were honored through some of the most prestigious awards in the field of journalism.
According to his colleagues, what mattered most to Drew was not the awards or recognition but it was always the people and the views who tuned in to listen to him.
Drew Griffin was a journalist who was admired and respected by all his colleagues for his deviation and ethics towards his profession. Griffin was so committed to his job that he did not even disclose the details of his illness to his colleagues.
He also did not allow his health condition to stop him from carrying out his profession and Drew was seen reporting up until the day he passed away.
In a note shared with the investigative team of CNN, the executive vice president of CNN Michael Bass noted that Drew Griffin was a fearless and artful person and he also knew his way around news stories, about how to push the story to its limits and also to tell it in a way that would make everyone understand the story.
Drew Griffin was born on 21 October 1962 in Illinois and attended the University of Illinois where he studied communication. Drew stepped into the field of journalism through WICD-TV, which is a television station in Illinois.
Drew took up the job of an investigative journalist for CBS 2 News which is located in Los Angeles and he stayed at the job for almost 10 years. Griffin joined CNN in May of 2004 and stayed at the firm until he passed away, making a career for almost two decades at CNN.
One of the most notable stories that Drew Griffin reported at the start of his career was the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which took place in 2005, one year after he joined CNN. While covering the incident for the channel, Drew reported looting that accused some police officers from New Orleans.
The event then led to a police investigation. It was also Drew, who brought light to the stories regarding the nursing home deaths after the Hurricane.
His efforts did not go unnoticed and as a reward for the hard work he did, Drew along with CNN was awarded Peabody Award for their efforts in coving the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

One of the most notable and prestigious awards came to Drew in 2005. It was for his reports about a fault in the Ford Motor company vehicles which caused them to catch fire, that Drew received the Emmy Award in business and financial reporting.
The following year, Drew repeated the victory as he was again awarded an Emmy for the documentary from CNN which was titled ‘How To Rob a Bank.’
Drew also managed to keep up the victory for a third year as he again won the same ward in 2007 for Hidden Spending, which was a segment about congressional spending. The fourth Emmy for Drew was awarded in 2017.
This time, he received the award for his story which revealed the fraud practices associated with Donald Trump’s real estate school, which was titled ‘Trump University Fraud.’
Just like his professional life, Drew also had a very happy and successful family life. He got married to his wife Margot and the couple has three children together. The family resided in the Atlanta Metropolitan area until he passed away on December 17, 2022.
