5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mexico Ahead Of National Earthquake Drill Of 2023

MEXICO: According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USG), a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck regions of southern Mexico on Tuesday night and was felt in the capital. However, there were no reports of injuries or destruction. This comes ahead of the National Drill of Mexico 2023 scheduled for tomorrow.

As per the report from USG, the earthquake happened around 60 miles (96km) northwest of the popular seaside town of Acapulco, in southern Guerrero state.

Mayor of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on her official Twitter account that authorities determined the earthquake’s magnitude is insufficient to justify turning on the city’s seismic alarm system.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre tweeted that the eyewitnesses saw the buildings in the city shake while the earthquake happened. According to them, the earthquake struck southern Mexico on Tuesday night around 10:55 PM. No people or anything was harmed according to reports.

The sudden quake happened ahead of the upcoming National Drill of Mexico 2023 organized by the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) along with the National Civil Protection Coordination and the  National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC). The drill is supposed to have a magnitude of 7. 8 with a center between Puebla and Veracruz.

The first National Earthquake Drill of 2023 will take place at 11:00 am on April 19. It will begin when the Mexican Seismic Alert System sounds.

The first National Earthquake Drill of 2023 in Mexico aims to strengthen the ability of the authorities, people, and rescue teams to react quickly in an emergency or disaster and to promote the culture of civil protection.

The drill is open to everyone at home, work, or any other location. The only thing required is to leave the area as soon as the alert sounds.

The Seismic alert will sound in the nine states of Mexico, including Oaxaca, Chiapas, Warrior, Puebla, Morelos, Mexico State, Mexico City, Tlaxcala, and Michoacan.

Puerto Vallarta would be a participant in it since it’s located in a risky area due to earthquakes. According to the authorities, Puerto Vallarta would be a perfect place for the hypothesis.

A hypothesis of an earthquake with 7.9 magnitudes and 30 kilometers epicenter from the municipality of Toliman will be followed in Jalisco. It would be similar to an earthquake that occurred on June 3, 1932.

According to Civil Protection authorities, the earthquake with the suggested epicenter of the first National Earthquake Drill of 2023 will not only destruct Puerto Vallarta but also the municipalities of Toliman, Casimiro, Tuxcacuesco, Castillo, Autlan de Navarro, San Gabriel, El Grullo, El Limon, Ejutla, Ayutla, Tonaya, Villa Purificacion, Zapotlan el Grande, Union de Tula, Cuautitlan de Garcia Barragan, Zapotlan el Vadillo, Zapotiltic and the coastal municipalities of Tomatlan, La Huerta, and  Cihuatlan.

In addition to the effects on the Central region, Altos Sur, Valles, Laguna, Cienega, and Sierra de Amula regions. It will moderately affect the rest of the regions in the state.

According to the Civil Protection Law of the State of Jalisco, the municipal government and the public administration department are required to conduct at least two evacuation drills per year.

In 2022, Puerto Vallarta witnessed an earthquake that caused minor damage. It was just ahead of an earthquake drill’s finishing.

During the upcoming earthquake drill, a siren would be heard and all the authorities and people would have to evacuate the place. There would be police, fire, and medical team mobilized in order to take quick actions in response to the drill.

In order to face the first National Earthquake Drill of 2023, you need to be aware of specific things. You’ll need to have a specific plan and be alert about the risks it might bring along.

You need to have a complete plan about what to do and assign responsibilities to each person. Be equipped with a telephone directory, first aid kit, and important documents on hand. Make sure to check on the safety zones, an emergency exists, and meeting points.

The authorities advise having a family civil protection plan so you may take simple pre-planning and self-defense precautions at home before, during, and after a disaster or emergency.

It is also important to identify the Internal Civil Protection Unit of your home, workplace, or school to organize the tasks that each person would play before an emergency arises.

Strong earthquakes in several parts of the country have caused numerous destruction and loss of lives since the beginning of this year. People are concerned about citizens in the country and the damage it is causing to their nation.

The most recent earthquake happened on Tuesday but fortunately did not cause any major destruction or human loss. The nation would have to expect more quakes in the future and is implementing the National Earthquake Drills as a precaution to make citizens react quickly in such situations.
