Glenn Edward Greenwald born in 1967 is a native of New York City. Being the son of Arlene and Daniel Greenwald, his early childhood days were spent in Lauderdale Lakes in Florida along with his family when they moved there.
When he was six, his parents made the decision to get separated and grow apart. His parents were Jewish practitioners and the interest of his grandparents were invested in Judaism.

Greenwald graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy in 1990 from George Washington University. In 1994 he received a JD from the New York University School of Law.
After graduating from the New York University School of Law he started to practice law in the litigation department at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

He worked there for one year and in the following year, he gave form to Greenwald Christoph & Holland, now known as Greenwald Christoph PC, his own litigation firm. In his firm, he litigated classes concerning issues of the constitutional law and civil rights of the U.S. He carried out many pro bono works.
He had represented Matthew Hale, the white supremacist, in Illinois because Greenwald thought that he should not be imprisoned. The neo-Nazi National Alliance was also his case.
Later in his life, he made the decision to cease his litigation practices after a decade of service. About this, in a later interview, he said that he decided to voluntarily wind down his practice in 2005 because he could do that and because after ten years he was bored with litigating full time.
He added that he wanted to do other things that he thought were more engaging and could make more of an impact, including political writing.
Greenwald began to write a blog, Unclaimed Territory, in 2005. The blog concentrated on publishing investigative reports about the CIA leak grand jury investigation, the Plame affair, the NSA warrantless surveillance controversy of 2001 – 2007, and the federal indictment of Scooter Libby.
The blog received the Koufax Award for Best New Blog in 2006.
In 2007 he became a writer for Salon, a politically liberal news opinion website in America. His articles in the Salon were primarily the ones such as the candidacy of former CIA official John O. Brennan for the job of either Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (D/CIA) or the next Director of National Intelligence (DNI) after the election of Barack Obama, and the anthrax attacks of 2001.
In 2012 he started a position in The Guardian, a British daily, in its American wing and left Salon. He contributed a daily article and a weekly column to the daily.
About his joining The Guardian, he wrote that it was the opportunity to reach a new audience and to further internationalize his readership, and be reinvigorated by a different environment. He left the daily after a year of joining because he had a once-in-a-career dream job opportunity to pursue.
