The name NAFO, which is short for North Atlantic Fellas Organization, became globally noticed after the post made by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine from their official Twitter account that featured a Shibu Inu meme.
After the tweet poster by the Defense Ministry, the Defense Minister of Ukraine, Oleksiy Reznikov also posted a similar tweet that featured an avatar of himself along with another Shibu Inu meme.
Dog meme posters from the official Twitter accounts of a Defense Minister and Department of a country will definitely confuse anyone beyond the limit but there is a perfect explanation for the tweet by both these accounts.
The NAFO Twitter memes serve a greater purpose than the normal memes that circulate the internet. These NAFO Twitter memes are a symbol of the informational weapons used by the Ukrainian defendants against the Russian invasion.
Rather than aiming a laugh from the person who comes across it, these NAFO Twitter memes are a form of Ukraine’s resistance to the Russian invasion, a way to reunite the Ukrainian society, mock and ridicule the wretchedness of the Russian aggression, and also to uphold the moral values.
NAFO enthusiasts who work behind this mee can be called the information army of Ukraine. Unlike most groups, NAFO is not an organization but a community that is brought together through these memes.
Along with engaging in informational warfare for Ukraine against Russia, NAFO also collects donations for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is a community of people who have come together with the single aim of helping Ukraine.
The origin of the NATO community is very recent and it was started by a Polish Twitter user by the name of Kama in 2022. Kama started to create an avatar for Twitter users as proof of a donation made to the Gregorian League of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Kama chose the already popular image of the Shiba Inu breed dogs mainly for the memes and he developed them and started circulating the pro-Ukranian memes. It was also Kama who gave the name ‘Fellas’ to his characters.
The idea of Kama and the meaning behind the memes attracted quite several followers as they became viral on the social media platform and many more people came forward in this informational warfare against Russia.
Soon enough, the community chose the name North Atlantic Fella Organization which is known as NAFO in short. The name has an intentional resemblance to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which is a military defense alliance.
The major image used by the NAFO members in their memes is of the popular dog breed Shinu Inu. Shinu Inu is one of the most popular dog breeds on the internet as the image has already been used by some of the most popular platforms like some of the most popular cryptocurrency platforms, making Shiba Inu a part of the popular cultural phenomenon.
The NAFO worked on the popular image of Shiba Inu and gave their touch to make the image of the dog stand out from the rest of the parties that use the same image.
The image used by NAFO added additional accessories to the image like military uniforms. Guns, caps, and other such things that they used to make fun of the Russian side.
The popularity of NAFO memes started to reach far and wide and currently, these memes are popular all over the world. As its popularity increased, the group also received huge support from people from all over the world who stood up to support Ukraine.
The members of NAFO do not hold back any chance they get to troll the policies or news from the Russian side. They have even aimed their trolls at the official pages of the Russian government and have held back on harassing people who support the Russian propaganda including publishers, government officials, and politicians.

The NAFO is very strong and coordinated in aiming their attacks through replies that mock the propaganda, creating memes and avatars with faces of Russian supporters, and sometimes even reporting the pages of such people in masses so that their age is affected severely.
The strength of NAFO has grown over the years. It has reached a level where it is somewhat difficult for the Russian forces to contain or counter their online attack. One of the most recent victims of the NAafo was the Russian ambassador to Austria Mykhailo Ulyanov.
He had been a target of the NAFO and has engaged in a long-standing argument with the group through his tweets and posts. But as the attack of the NAFO reached a point, Ulyanov was forced to take a break from his social media accounts. As of June 2022, he posited that he was in need of a break from social media platforms.
The break of the Russian ambassador from social media is a sign that shows how strong is the NAFO. Through its well-coordinated and active social media presence, the community is achieving what it set out for, which is to raise its voice against Russian propaganda and movements.
The community has made headlines in some of the reputed media organizations like The Washington Post. All these news and development also suggest that the strategies of NAFO are working as the community wants them to.
