Three days after a traffic stop by five Memphis Police Department officers, Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old man passed away on January 10. 2023. He was stopped on January 7 for reckless driving and was arrested.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Tyre Nichols and police had a clash that day which led to his death. After an internal inquiry, five black police officers from the Memphis Police Department were fired and arrested for the murder.
The video records of the traffic stop were shown to Nichols’ family and lawyer during a meeting with the police and city officials. The video showed how hard the officers beat him for minutes.

Police Stopped Tyre Nicholas On January 7
According to the reports, the police officers stopped a car for alleged reckless driving on January 7 at around 8:30 pm.
The driver of the car was the 29-year-old black man, Tyre Nichols. The police and Nichols confronted each other and according to Memphis police Nichols fled on foot then. Later the Police stopped and arrested him again after a confrontation.
After the arrest, Tyre Nichols was said to be having trouble breathing and was taken to the nearby Hospital.
Death Of Tyre Nichols On January 10
Three days after the incident, Tyre Nichols died at the hospital due to the internal injuries he had during the encounter with the police. The family of Nichols claimed that the cardiac arrest and kidney failure happened to Nichols because the beating of officers caused the death.
Updates Of Investigation On January 15
The officers involved in the incident that occurred on January 7 were suspended from duty following the death of Tyre Nichols.
The actions were taken according to the custom within the department. The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were contacted to take over the investigation.
Beginning Of Federal Investigation On January 18
On January 18, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice declared that they would be investigating the case’s civil rights level. The Western District of Tennessee US Attorney Kevin G. Ritz publicized the news regarding the investigation.
In a statement, Ritz said that the state officials have officially disclosed that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating. A civil rights investigation has been launched by the United States Attorney’s cooperation with the FBI and DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.
The Memphis Police Officers Were Fired On January 20
Five of the officers involved in the traffic stop were identified and fired by Memphis police on January 20. This resulted from their violations of numerous departmental rules following an internal inquiry.
According to the reports, the officers named Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr., and Justin Smith were fired. They were accused of violating their duty to intervene, offer help, and the duty to refrain from excessive use of force.
The police officers who were charged have been in the department for three to six years. All of them belonged to the SCORPION, a team of around 50 police officers put together a year earlier to handle a high volume of major crimes.
The officers drive unmarked cars and dress casually. They also have bulletproof vests with the letters POLICE on them.
According to the attorneys of Tyre Nichols’ family, the dismissal of the five police officers is the initial step toward getting Justice for Tyre and his family.
Apart from these five police officers, Two employees from the Memphis Fire Department were also fired because of neglecting the initial patient care for Tyre Nichols.
Tyre Nichols’ Family Watched The Video On January 23
The family of Nichols and their attorney’s watched the video of his encounter with the five police officers on January 23. One of the attorneys of the Nichols family described the video as heinous, appalling, violent, deplorable, and troublesome on every level.
Another attorney of that family said that Tyre Nichols appeared to be defenseless the entire time. According to his family, Nichols was beaten for almost three minutes continuously. He was kicked in the video without an apology or restraint.
hey added that Nichols kept asking the officers what wrong he did. But the police never listened and they kicked, pepper sprayed, and stun-grunted their kid.
Preliminary postmortem finding shows that Nichols experienced extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating internally.

Officers Were Charged On January 26
A grand jury charged five of the officers involved in the Nichols incident. They are all in detention and each faces murder charges.
According to Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy, they have been accused of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravating kidnapping, causing bodily injury, and aggravating kidnapping involving the possession of a weapon.
According to the Nichols family, an independent autopsy conducted by a forensic pathologist retained by the family’s counsel revealed that Nichols died due to excessive bleeding induced by severe eating.
Tyre Nichols’ family and attorneys released a statement that his observed injuries are consistent with those seen on the video of his deadly interaction with police on January 7. The other information regarding the case and its assessments will be released at a later date.
Cerelyn Davis, the chief of Police in Memphis described the behavior of the police officers as heinous, reckless, and brutal, adding that the video of the encounter will be published soon.
After the release of the video, Chief Davis said she expects protests but she cautioned that while she expects outrage. She added that none of them is intended to provoke violence.
President Joe Biden stated that he joined the Nichols family in advocating for peaceful protest before the police body-worn camera video footage of the incident was released to the public.
He said that it’s normal to be outraged, but violence can’t be appreciated and it is inappropriate. According to the president, violence is harmful and is forbidden by the law.
