Jumia Kenya said that it plans to double the number of products it sells to 1 million next year. This will make the company the only online one-stop-shop in Africa. This comes after the recent success of the Black Friday event, which brought a record-breaking 10 million customers to the platform.
Jumia started the annual sales event in Kenya in 2015, and it is still the biggest online shopping event of the year.
“Despite the tough business climate of the last few months, Black Friday this year broke all records for all of our businesses. This is great news for the thousands of Kenyan businesses that took part in the event, and it shows that Jumia is the future of online shopping in Kenya. The Chief Operating Officer of Jumia Travel, Estelle Verdier, said, “We are grateful to everyone who made it possible for us to bring happiness through shopping, travel, and even food.”
Sam Odima from Kitui was one of the people who had a great time on Black Friday. He won a piece of land in Nanyuki from Jumia and i-Properties.
On Tuesday, when Mr. Odima got his title deed from Jumia, he said he was very grateful to have won the piece of land through the online platform.
“I was so surprised when Jumia called me and told me I had won the piece of land in Nanyuki. I went to their website every day to make sure I found the letters that made up the voucher code to unlock this piece of land. Odima, who was very happy, said, “I’m also thankful that they were kind enough to pay for my travel, lodging, and meals during this trip to Nairobi to get the deed.”
The online store also plans to start a customer loyalty program next year to take advantage of the fact that customers who shop online more than once do so because of the lower prices, ease of use, variety of products, and good quality. The average number of times a customer visits the Jumia platform in a day is 3.
Some of the best things about the 2017 Black Friday Festival are:
◾ During the 2017 Black Friday Festival, 9.6 million people went to the online shopping platform Jumia. Jumia started the annual sales event in Kenya in 2015, and it is still the biggest shopping event of the year, both online and off. This year, stores that aren’t online are also taking part.
◾ We sent out 3 times as many products in November as we did last year, and by the end of the month, we were almost 10 times as big as we were in January. This shows that the e-commerce industry in Kenya is still growing quickly.
◾ The first delivery went to a student in Nairobi who placed an order one minute after the event went live.
◾ During that time, 9.6 million customers went to Jumia Kenya, and each user had an average of 3 sessions.
20% of visits came from the Jumia app, and the rest came from Mobile Web and Desktop. This is more than last year, and it is due to the fact that 150,000 people downloaded the app.
◾ There were 3 times as many vendors at the event, and they listed 20 times as many products (600,000 products were listed for the sale compared to 30,000 last year same event)
◾ The farthest delivery from Nairobi was to Mandera, which is close to the point where Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia meet.
◾ Huawei Mate 10, Infinix Zero 5, and Oppo F5 youth are the first of their kind to be released.
The three fastest-moving groups are:
Groceries (Unga, rice, sugar, blue band, royco, action, omo) (Unga, rice, sugar, blue band, royco, action, omo) 15 times as big as last year
Kids, Babies, and Toys (diapers, toys, accessories) – Five times as big as last year
TVs and home theaters are three times as big as they were last year.
What are the best-selling items? (The Blue Band from Unilever, Pampers diapers, and the Infinix Hot 5 Lite)
In the past, sales were mostly of cell phones and electronics, but this year, FMCG products from well-known brands like Tuskys, Unilever, and Procter & Gamble have been the most popular. The company just started selling groceries this year. They did this to get their customers to buy more from them again.
