Regarded as one of the largest aerospace manufacturers in the world, the Boeing Company has announced that there will be a short pause in the upcoming deliveries of their model 737 MAX.
The pause on the delivery of the model is said to arise from a quality issue from one of the suppliers for the company, Spirit AeroSystems.
Spirit AeroSystems is the manufacturer of the fuselages that are used in some of the 737 models and in one of their statements to Boeing, Spirit AeroSystems has notified a possible ‘quality issue’ in some of the fuselages used in certain 737 models from Boing. The announcement regarding the news was made by Boeing on Thursday.
The quality issue notified by Spirit AeroSystems is speculated to have a very significant effect on a large number of undelivered 737 MAX models from the company. The issue could directly affect the models that are currently in storage and also the ones that are currently under production.
The Boeing Company also added that the issue could directly result in a lower number of deliveries of the 737 MAX models in the near term for the company.
As the news regarding the ‘quality issue’ in some of the 737 models from Boeing was announced, the company made sure to assure the people that the problem did not pose any kind of safety threat to flight and also that it did not concern any of the flights or models that were still in service.
The quality issue reported by Spirit AeroSystems is said to have an effect on different models like MAX 7, MAX 8, and MAX 8200 airplanes, along with the P-8 Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft, all of which come under the 737 MAX family.
The announcement made by the Boeing Company has stirred different discussions and doubts among the people who depend on their service for travel and in order to make sure that these issues are properly dealt with, the Federal Aviation Administration has stepped in.
The agency is said to assess the issues and has a final say about the new models from the Boeing company that are expected to be delivered soon.
The agency stated that it valued the assessment report submitted by Boeiong and that there was no immediate safety concern regarding the models as per the facts and data that were presented before the agency by Boeing.
Looking deeper into the ‘quality issue’ cited by Spirit AeroSystem, the problem is associated with the joining of the aft fuselage which is manufactured by Spirit, to the vertical tail.
The problem is that, in models that were sent to Boeing earlier from Spirit, the structure of the fuselages was not correctly attached to the vertical tail.
Also, it should be noted that other models of the 737 MAX family like the MAX 9 use fitting that is made by a different manufacturer other than Spirit, and the models have properly attached parts and have not reported any kind of ‘quality issues.’
Spirit AeroSystems officially notified the Boeing Company about the problem regarding the fault in the attachment of the fuselage on Wednesday. Upon checking the report, it was understood that the problem dates back years, to 2019 to be precise.
As the problem dates back almost 4 years, the Boeing Company is still trying to determine the precise number of aircraft that could be affected. The Boeing Company had no response to the question of whether the issue would affect the company’s plan to increase the number of 737 productions as the company aims to deliver around 400 MAXs this year.
Before the problem was reported by Spirit, Boeing planned to make a delivery of 111 MAXs in the first quarter of 2023, and with the number in mind, the company had also increased the production number from 31 to 38 per month, starting from June.

The reported issue has also affected the shares of both Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems drastically. Hours after the news was announced, the shares of Spirit AeroSystems fell 11.8% and the shares of Boeing fell 5.3%.
The Boeing Company has addressed the issue and has also reached out to their customers regarding their concerns over safety and the delivery schedule.
The company stated that they have notified the Federal Aviation Administration regarding the issue and also that the company was carrying out inspections on different models to identify the reported non-confirming fittings and to replace any such issue if necessary.
The company also expressed its regret to customers for the effects that the issue could have on their delivery schedule. Boeing stated that the company was in contact with the customers regarding the concerns over the delivery schedule.
As for Spirit AeroSystems, the company also made it clear that they will be carrying out an inspection and repair regarding the affected fuselages.
