Since the awards were established by the Black Entertainment Television network in 2001, they have recognized outstanding achievements by black entertainers in various categories, including music, acting, sports, among others.
Africa has had several acts recognized for the Best International Act: Africa and Best International Act categories at BET, including Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Wizkid, Black Coffee, Davido, Ice Prince, 2Baba, and D’banj since 2011.

“Sometime around 1835, a mission to impose dominance on the nation of Africa was started, and now is the time to overturn this practice and return to our past, because in order for black lives to matter, Africa must matter,” he said during his acceptance speech.
