Looking back in history, there have been quite a few cases of death of young rappers, who have died of a drug overdose. Deaths of people through drug overdoses are seen by society in a different manner and often we do not try to look into the situation that made them do what they did.
Due to this stigma that prevails in our society, people with drug addiction issues often find it difficult to open up about the issue.
While death is an inevitable part of life, losing a young talent, a musician, is a very sad experience especially if you are connected to that person for their talent and the music they produce.
Latest to the list of drug overdose fatalities among musicians, American rapper Alexander Woods, better known by his stage name Big Scarr, passed away on December 22, 2002, due to an alleged drug overdose. He was just 22 years old.
The rapper was recognized for his talent at a young age and he was signed by Gucci Mane’s 1017 Records.
The news about the death of the young rapper started circulating online platforms on December 22, 2022, The death of the rapper was speculated to be a drug overdose and the news about his death was confirmed by rapper Gucci Mane.
Big Scarr was signed to his record label, 1017 Records. Even though the news was confirmed by Gucci Mane, there had been no official statement from the part of local police or any news sources as of now.
In his post on social media through which Gucci confirmed the news, he wrote ‘This Hurt’ and ‘I miss you’ along with a mention of Scarr’s official account.
As the news started to spread on social media, more singers and celebrities started to post their condolence messages. Rapper Key Glock posted ‘This s**t wicked wtf bruh!!!’
Earlier in one of the Instagram posts by Scarr, he revealed that he will be joining Big Glock in his tour Glockoma 2023. He is also a rapper who hails from Memphis. Jamaican – American podcaster and YouTuber DJ Akademiks also marked his condolences through a message that read ‘RIP Big Scarr’ on Twitter.
His fellow rapper Enchanting, who is also signed by Gucci Mane’s label, posted an Instagram story in which she posted a photo of her and Scarr hugging and captioned that photo saying ‘I’ll do anything to hug you one more time.’
Big Scarr was born on April 7, 2000, in Memphis, Tennessee. Alexander Woods spent most of his childhood with the Magnolia community which is based in South Memphis. Woods grew up with his grandmother and lived with her until she passed away.
Woods was 13 years old at that time. When he was just 16 years old, Woods encountered a car accident in which he was thrown out of the windshield of his friend’s car. Later it was revealed that the accident became the inspiration for his stage name Big Scarr.
It is said that Big Scar was not really interested in rap music earlier; it was through his friend Baby K. that he received the attention that he had. He released his track titled ‘Make A Play’ in 2019 and the video had quite a number of views on YouTube.
The popularity of the song rose again as Tommy Craze noticed the video during one of the reaction videos. After the popularity and success of the song, Big Scarr was signed by Gucci Mane’s record label 1017 Records. The 2021 track ‘SolcyBoyz’ changed the course of his career.

The song went on to gather popularity and attention from music lovers and made his name even more popular. The song also featured artists like rapper Pooh Shiesty, who is the cousin of Big Scarr, and rapper Googiano, better known for his song ‘Molly.’
Big Scarr’s biggest hit was his mixtape titled ‘Big Grim Reaper.’ The song was released on April 16, 2022. The song was an instant hit and it was reported to have sold around 22,000 copies just in its opening week.
In the following year, Big Scarr released the deluxe version of his mixtape which was titled ‘Big Grim Reaper: The Return.’ The newly released version included appearances from different other artists like rapper Offset, Gucci Mane and Queez Ruthless. In 2022, Big Scarr made it as a part of the XXL Freshman class.
The death of Big Scarr is not the first case of this nature. There have been many cases where young musicians have lost their lives to drug overdoses or other violent issues.
It is so sad to see such gifted young talents lose their life over issues that have a solution and there have been very low efforts to stop such tragic deaths. The issue should be taken seriously and suitable measures should be implemented in order to avoid such tragic deaths.
