Zeus is the true supreme Greek deity. He was considered the father of all and the head of all the Olympic gods. His name translates as the bright sky. Zeus had to fight the titans for a long time. He had to fight the titans for a long time to gain power and rule the world.
Struggle for Power
It all started when there was only chaos in the world. Out of this chaos came the earth goddess Gaia and the father of heaven Uranus. Gaia produced numerous offspring. Among them were nymphs and titans and cyclopes. Uranus felt that some of his children did not belong on earth and imprisoned them in Tartarus. Gaia was grieved and turned to her other children to rebel against their father.
Cronus agreed to this. He created a sickle, with which he subsequently cut off his father’s genitals. He threw the severed organs into the sea. Gaia hoped that afterwards Cronus would free his brothers and sisters. But he did not. Furious Haea predicted to Cronus that he would repeat his father’s fate and be dethroned by his son. Her prediction came true. In spite of the fact that Cronus did everything he could to avoid his fate, it was his son Zeus who dethroned him.
Zeus belonged to the third generation of the gods. He took part in the overthrow of the second generation, the Titans. The titans, led by Cronus, were cruel. After Zeus, rescued by his mother from his father Kronos, grew up, he was determined that he would overthrow Kronos and gain power. First he pulled his brothers and sisters from the womb of Cronus. To do this, he prepared a special potion that made Cronus regurgitate the swallowed babies. They came out of it unharmed.
Zeus then decided to go further against his father. A great battle of gods and titans began. It was called Titanhomania. The war went on for ten years. The one-eyed Cyclopes came to Zeus’ aid. They were grateful to Zeus for freeing them from Tartarus. The cyclopes forged lightning bolts for Zeus. The thunderer struck the titans with them aptly. But the forces were equal. And no one could prevail. Then Zeus sought more help. He called for new helpers, one hundred-armed giants. They looked very scary. The giants grabbed huge stones and threw them at the titans. The earth shuddered with such a battle. But the titans never retreated.
Only after Zeus began to hurl his lightning bolts at the titans with double the force and all nature around was declared fire, the titans could not withstand such pressure, their powers were exhausted and they were imprisoned in Tartarus.
It was a victory for the gods of the Olympians. The Titans were completely exterminated and the world was ruled by the Olympian gods.
Power over the world was divided between three brothers: Zeus, Hades and Poysedon. The first ruled the heavens, the second the underworld, and the third the sea. The gods settled on Mount Olympus. There they lived in a beautiful castle. Zeus sat on his throne and watched everyone. Whoever did evil, he punished, and whoever did good, he encouraged.
Fighting Typhon
After the gods defeated the Titans, peaceful life did not last long. The earth goddess Gaia was angry with the gods for being very cruel to her titan children. From a drop of Cronus’ blood she spawned the terrible monster Typhon. He had a hundred dragon heads. He made terrible sounds that included both human voices and the roar of animals. The earth trembled beneath him. The gods, seeing him, fled in fright.
Zeus alone was not afraid. He began throwing lightning bolts at the terrible monster and was able to defeat him. Tychon was crushed by a mountain. Sometimes steam comes out of the place and lava erupts. After that, no one disturbed the peaceful life of the gods. They lived peacefully on Mount Olympus, and Zeus ruled over all.
