Scott Bruce Rolen is a former American professional baseball player who is often regarded as one of the best third basemen of this generation. Scott had been a part of some of the best teams in Major League Baseball like the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Cincinnati Reds.

Scott Rolen made headlines as he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on his sixth try.

He became the only player to be selected into the 2023 Hall of Fame class who was voted by the Baseball Writers Association of America this year. A player needs 75% of votes to be selected and Rolen was able to just make it with 76.3% of votes.

During his first time of eligibility, Rolen was only able to receive just 10.2% votes and was able to work his way through to finally being selected.

Scott Rolen – Early Life

Scott Rolen was born and brought up in Indiana, with Evansville as his hometown. Rolen spent most of his childhood there and also received his formal education in Indiana too. He attended Jasper High School in Jasper, Indiana, and being passionate about baseball, Rolen was also a part of the team.

During his senior year at Jasper High School, Rolen proved to be the best at baseball and he was awarded the title of Indiana Mr. Baseball.

Even though his main focus was on basketball during that time, Rolen found the time to play other games like tennis. Rolen showcased exceptional skills in basketball that he was named to the All Stars team of Indiana high school basketball. 

After completing his high school education, basketball was the first choice for Scott Rolen and he received scholarships from different Universities like Oklahoma State University and the University of Alabama. Finally, Rolen chose the Georgia Bulldogs as his team and committed to playing for the Bulldogs.

After committing to the team, Rolen faced a complicated decision as he was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies of the Major Baseball League during the 1993 MLB Draft.

Initially, Rolen tried his best to continue playing for both teams and was looking for a deal that allowed him to do so but later he decided to choose baseball over basketball.

He canceled his deal with the Bulldogs and decided to join the Phillies. Roland played around 25 games in his debut season and was able to showcase excellent performance.

After joining the Phillies, Rolen attended spring training and he started off his 1994 season with Low A Spartanburg Phillies. Which is a minor-league baseball team. Rolen played his first MLB match for the Philadelphia Phillies on August 1, 1996.

His first match was against the St. Louis Cardinals and the Phillies were able to win the match easily. Rolen was able to showcase excellent performance during his time with the Phillies and he was named the National League Rookies of the award while he was a part of the team.

Rolen became the second player from the Phillies to have received the title. 

Rolen later joined the St. Louis Cardinals and he played for the team from 2002 to 2007. One of the best seasons in his baseball career was during his time with the Cardinals in 2004. His performance was so impressive during that season, he became the player with the highest votes for the All-Star team.

He was also one of the leading players in the National League in terms of RBIs and was also often ranked among the top in most offensive statistics.

Rolen joined the Toronto Blue Jays through exchange and was a part of the team for the time period from 2008 to 2009. His time with the Jays was not very successful as Rolen faced several injuries during the season. 

Scott Rolen was a part of the Cincinnati Reds from 2009 to 2012. Rolen was traded and became a part of the team. To compensate for his former seasons, Rolan was able to showcase a good performance and was even able to guide his team to wins.

He played a major role in winning the Central Division, which was the first championship that the Reds won in 15 seasons. Rolen also received his eighth Golden Glove award while he was a part of the Reds.

Scott Rolen is the fourth third baseman in history ever to score 2,000 hits, 500 doubles, 300 home runs, and 1,200 RBI. Scott Rolen retired from baseball by the end of the 2012 season.

Scott Rolen is often regarded as one of the best third basemen of this generation. He re-assured this title with his excellent performance and highly successful career. With such a great track record, Scott Rolen was also able to receive a considerable amount as his salary.

Even though the exact figures are not available there are reports that suggest that Rolen received a sum of $6.5 million annually from his career as a professional baseball player in MLB.

Scott Rolen is a married man with a very happy family. He got married to Niki Warner on February 2, 2002. The couple had been together ever since. They also have two kids from the marriage and they are named Raine Tyler Rolen and Fin Edward Rolen.

Apart from his baseball career, in 2018, Rolen took up the position of Director of Player Development for Indiana University baseball.

Scott Rolen – Awards And Honors

With a groundbreaking track record as a baseball player, Rolen has received multiple accolades throughout his career. These awards and honors have proved that Scott Rolen made no mistake while choosing baseball over basketball for his future.

One of the most prestigious and recent honors that Rolen received was his selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in 2023.

Apart from this feat, Rolan is also an eight-time winner of the National League 3B Golden Glove Award, seven-time National All-Star, Rookie of the Year Award in 1997, and also the National Silver Slugger in 2002.
