The Chinese multinational company Alibaba Group Holdings Limited finally revealed its generative AI on Tuesday. The technology is the version of the company that powers the chatbot revelation ChatGPT.
The company also stated that the technology will be incorporated into all the applications from the company in near future. The new technology is named Tongyi Qianwen and is said to possess both English and Chinese language capabilities.
The technology was presented to the world at the 2023 Alibaba Cloud summit and in one of the filmed demonstrations, Tongyi Qianwen was shown completing different tasks such as planning trip itineraries, advising shoppers on different varieties of makeup to purchase, and also making invitation letters.
As a first step, the new AI technology will be incorporated into DingTalk. It is the workplace messaging application of Alibaba. Incorporating the application into DingTalk is expected to make the process of writing notes, writing emails, and drafting business proposals much easier with the assistance of Tongyi Qianwen.
As a second step in the growth of the technology, Tongyi Qianwen will be incorporated into the voice assistant used at Alibaba named Tmall Genie. The executives of the company who were present at the summit seemed very excited about the new AI technology and its future possibilities.
In one of his statements made during a live-streamed event, the CEO of Alibaba Group, Daniel Zhang also shared his excitement about the new initiative from the group. He said that the new technology will bring about a massive change in almost every aspect of work and life.
He said that there will be visible changes in the way we produce, the way in which we work, and also in the way that we lead our lives. He also added that new initiatives like Tongyi Qianwen are the big picture of making AI tools more popular and familiar in the coming future.
The company has also stated that they plan to open up the new technology to their customers so that they will be able to customize their own large language models from there on. The company is planning to open the registration for Tongyi Qianwen on Friday.
Generative AI is a technology that learns how to make a new decision or carry out an action based on the past date and thereby creating new content. The popularity of the technology was ignited by ChatGPT, the open AI backed by Microsoft last year.
Since its release, the technology has been a sensation among netizens, prompting other companies to try and come up with their version of the technology and get a little further in the game.
The news about an upcoming ChatGPT rival was first shared by Alibaba Group in February. While the news was confirmed by the company, not much information regarding the technology was shared at that time.
As the model was president at the summit, the company also stated that it will be integrated into all businesses of the company in the near future. Tongyi Qianwen, the new generative AI released by Alibaba is also expected to get better and more efficient in the future too.

The company also stated that there will be new improvements added to Tongyi Qianwen in the coming years. The company describes it as a ‘more compelling’ feature and the new addition is hinted to be image understanding and text-to-image which will make the generative AI even more interactive, efficient, and popular.
Along with making the feature more advanced, the company also makes sure that its clients have easy access and benefits from Tongyi Qianwen.
In order to ensure that, the new facility is said to be fine-tuned by adding adequate proprietary information and data about the clients which will reduce resources and also the cost for the companies.
As mentioned earlier, after the introduction of the Microsoft-backed ChatGPT, many companies have invested in the technology and Alibaba is also one among them. But it is not the only Chinese company that has succeeded in the field.
Companies like Baidu have released their own ChatGPT version which is named Ernie Bot in March. The Bot is currently open only for trial users. The current version of the generative AI tool Tongyi Qianwen is based on Tongyi. It is a pre-trained model framework that unifies the different AI models of the company.
The company is currently regarded as the world’s third largest and also leading IaaS provider in the Asia Pacific region in terms of revenue since 2018.
Another notable difference that took place after the announcement of the new technology by the company was the change in the share value of Alibaba Group. Hong Kong-listed shares of the company reported a surge of 3% in their share values after the announcement of the new technology.
