Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Iphone 14 Pro Max: Designation
- iPhone 14 Pro Max – Dynamic Island
- Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – bigger screen, lighter, no bulge camera
Relative to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is nearly indistinguishable. – the only difference is the “Dynamic Island” update. This alternative to bangs animates everything from alerts and notifications to live events.
It’s a very clever innovation; for example, you can see a mini music player at the top of the left display, a countdown timer on the right, and so on. This innovation makes the user experience more interesting.
However, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is an elegant-looking product with a matte glass back and stainless steel sides, it is thicker and heavier than the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Part of the reason for this is that the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a larger camera.
The Phone 14 Pro Max measures 6.33 x 3.05 x 0.31 inches (6.7 inches) and weighs 8.47 ounces. Conversely, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is taller and thicker but weighs significantly less, measuring 6.43 x 3.07 x 0.35 inches (6.8 inches) and 8 ounces.
Additionally, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a camera that is cleverly blended into the back of the phone. As a result, the camera doesn’t have much of a bulge.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Iphone 14 Pro Max: Displays
- iPhone 14 Pro Max — brighter
- Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra — Higher resolution
As mentioned, both screens are absolutely stunning, but digging deeper, we can see a more nuanced comparison of the differences.
Technically, Samsung’s screen contains a higher resolution – 3088 x 1440 pixels compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 2796 x 1290. this isn’t a big deal, as you won’t really notice it during use.
Both are LTPO panels with refresh rates as low as 1Hz and as high as 120Hz. For the first time in a long time, Samsung didn’t win the display brightness battle, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 2,000 nits of peak brightness beating the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 1,800 nits. But in reality, the difference is negligible – both screens work perfectly even in strong sunlight.
In addition, the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s screen is not only slightly larger but also has a single-hole punch. In contrast, the iPhone’s pill-shaped cutout, known as the “dynamic island,” is much less intrusive during use.
I’ve already gone on record as saying I really like the Dynamic Island. I’m clearly a looker, and the iPhone’s dynamic island looks even better to me. Aside from the looks, it also brings some practical benefits (already mentioned above).
But for many, the pill-shaped cutout still takes too much away from the screen. That’s a fair point – the Galaxy S22 Ultra display does feel more immersive if I’m watching a video in full screen.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Iphone 14 Pro Max: Performance
iPhone 14 Pro Max – More powerful chips, faster conversion speeds
The iPhone wins this one, hands down. The Apple A16 Bionic is a much more powerful and efficient chip than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or the Exynos 2200. Regardless of the type of test (benchmark apps, video export speed tests, machine learning tasks), the iPhone 14 Pro Max was superior.
The A16 Bionic of Apple is once again regarded as the fastest chip in a phone. The CPU is rated at just 10 percent faster than the A15 Bionic, but the memory bandwidth is increased by 50 percent, which helps with gaming and graphics processing.
In terms of graphics, the iPhone 14 Pro Max scored 12,363 frames per second or 74 frames every second in the 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited benchmark. The Galaxy S22 Ultra scored 9,499 and 56.87 fps.
In video editing tests, such as transcoding 4K video to 1080p video in the Adobe Premiere Rush app, the iPhone 14 Pro Max took an average of 30 seconds. 47 seconds were needed for the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Iphone 14 Pro Max: Camera
- iPhone 14 Pro Max – Better night scenes, portraits, and details
- Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – Stronger zoom system, sharper main sensor
Apple’s flagship starts with a new 48MP wide-angle camera with a quad-pixel sensor for brighter, more detailed photos.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a sharper 108MP primary sensor with dual telephoto lenses with 3x and 10x zoom. Add night photography for low-light photo shooting, and you have a powerful camera phone.
One area where the Galaxy S22 Ultra still wins is the zoom. At 15x, you can see a lot more detail in this photo, and the bark looks sharper. Also, this is the maximum zoom level for the Pro Max, while the S22 Ultra can go up to 30x or even 100x.
It’s well known that the iPhone has the edge in portraits, not just because Apple’s treatment of skin is more natural or a more convincing artificial bokeh, but the iPhone 14 Pro Max also shoots portraits at a more normal 2x focal length that’s closer to a typical 50mm camera lens. And the iPhone does a better job of shooting video.
Overall, both phones have excellent video capabilities and selfie capabilities. Apple has dramatically improved its camera hardware with larger sensors and more pixels; Samsung has improved its computational photography and software image processing.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Iphone 14 Pro Max: Special Feature
Galaxy S22 Ultra – S pen
The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a number of special features, including dynamic islands, an always-on display, and action mode video.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra has an extra piece of hardware not found on the iPhone or 99 percent of phones: a stylus. Samsung calls it the S Pen, and it can do a variety of things, from the obvious (like an input tool for sketches and doodles) to a Bluetooth remote that doubles as a camera.
I rarely use the S Pen, but some people put a lot of trust in it, and ultimately, it’s a free bonus that Samsung won’t charge extra for, so it can only be a good thing.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Iphone 14 Pro Max: Battery
- iPhone 14 Pro Max – Longer battery life
- Galaxy S22 Ultra – faster charging speeds
The iPhone 14 Pro Max wins in terms of battery life. In our web-surfing battery test, the phone lasted an average of 13 hours and 39 minutes over a 5G connection with 150 nits of screen brightness. The Galaxy S22 Ultra lasted 10 minutes and 18 seconds in the same test, so the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers better battery life.
Unfortunately, the iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn’t charge too quickly. Using the 30W charger, we were only able to charge it to 42% in 30 minutes (the official claim is 50%). In comparison, the Galaxy S22 Ultra charged 58% in 30 minutes using a 25W charger, and when using a 45W charger, the phone reached 67% in 30 minutes.
