The game between the Buffalo Sabres and the Columbus Blue Jackets came to an exciting showdown with the Sabres’ forward Tage Thompson taking the team to a clear win by scoring five points and an assist in the game.
Along with the joy of leading his team to the win, Tage also set a record for scoring four points in the first period of the game. Tage Thompson is the second U.S.-born player to have achieved this feat in a single game.
Not just that but, in the entire history of the NHL, Tage Thompson is the fourth player to have scored four points in the first period of a regular-season game. The other players who have succeeded in achieving this record are Peter Bondra, Grant Mulvey and Joe Malone.
Along with the four points he scored in the first half, Thompson earned a total of five points and also an assist, in the entire length of the game. That is also another record for him as he is the fourth active player who has scored five goals in a single game. Timo Meier, Mika Zibanejad and Patrik Laine are the other players who hold this record.
The game was clearly dominated by the Buffalos right from the start. It was Dylan Cozens who put the team on board, by scoring their first point at 3:21 of the first. He made the goal through an assist from Alex Tuch. The game just kicked off from there and the following minutes saw some of the best moves from the Buffalos and also some brilliant goals from their players.
Thompson scored his first goal and the second goal for his team around 2:09 later the first goal. That was the start of what ended up being a record for himself.
The third strike came from Rasmus Dahlin at 7:28 of the first and the fourth goal was again scored by the star of the game, Tage Thompson, around 23 seconds later. The third and fourth goals by Thompson came during the power plays. The match made Tage Thompson the first-ever Sabres player to have scored four goals and five points in a period.
Tage Thompson stated after the match that it was really a rewarding feeling and he felt like the years that he has put into it have finally been rewarded. He also added that the experience leaves him hungrier for new heights and achievements.
In a statement given by Thompson, he said that the main focus of the team was to keep things simple. The team was able to perform very well in their previous matches this season and according to Thompson, one of the main objectives that the players try to keep in mind is not to overcomplicate the game.

He added that when the team and the players are successful at keeping the game simple, they tend to focus more and get the puck and their bodies closer to the net.
Don Granato, the coach of the Buffalos said that the performance by Tage in the game was amazing and he congratulated the whole team for setting the table for his better performance and the eventual win of the team. He added that the energy, collective effort by the team and their focus were what contributed to the win that they had.
While the Buffalos ultimately swept out Columbus, only two players from the team were able to score a goal for the team. With the game ending on a score of 9-4, players Patrik Laine and Gustav Nyquist were the only ones who scored two goals each for the team.
The state of the team is not looking good this season, as they have lost five of their six previous matches. This match also marked the sixth straight defeat for Columbus in their home game.
The Sabres have now matched the Kraken as they become the second team to score nine points in a single game this season.
