Joel Hans Embiid is a professional basketball player from Cameron who plays for the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is also a citizen of France and the United States.
Joel Embiid’s Early Life And Family
Joel Embiid was born in Yaounde, Cameroon, on March 16, 1994. He was the oldest son of Thomas Embiid, a military officer, and Christine Embiid. He had two siblings, Muriel is the name of his younger sister. In 2014, a car accident caused the death of his younger brother Arthur.
Joel’s parents wanted him to be a doctor. Despite having goals of playing volleyball in Europe, Embiid started playing basketball at the age of 15 by copying the playstyle of legendary NBA player Hakeem Olajuwon.
He has a son with a Brazilian model Anne de Paula, who he is dating right now since 2018. He gave his son the same name as his younger brother.

At the age of 16, Joel Embiid immigrated to the country and enrolled at Florida’s Montverde Academy. Due to a lack of playing time, he eventually transferred to The Rock School in Gainesville, Florida. Embiid led his team to a 33-4 record and a state championship as a senior, averaging 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
Joel chose to play at Kansas under head coach Bill Self after being rated a five-star talent by the majority of recruiting services. Before developing a stress fracture in his back, he started 20 of the 28 games he played during his first season. Before the Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament, the injury ended his season.
He received honors including Second Team All-Big 12 and Big 12 Defensive Player of the year. He left Kansas after the season and announced that he was available for the NBA Draft.
Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, a former NBA player who is also from Yaounde, helped Embiid immigrate to the US at the age of 16 in order to pursue a basketball career. Mbah a Moute was the one who first noticed the talent in him.
Embiid was selected third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft despite a foot injury that was expected to keep him out for several months after playing one year of college basketball at Kansas. He eventually was unable to participate throughout his first two NBA seasons because of a setback injury.
After waiting until the 2016-17 season to make his NBA debut, Joel performed well enough in 31 games to earn a spot on the All-Rookie First Team.
Joel and the 76ers agreed to a five-year, $148 million contract in October 2017. He subsequently started to establish himself as one of the NBA’s top big men. In 2018 and 2019, he was also chosen for the NBA Second Team and All-Defensive Second Team.
Joel signed a four-year extension with the 76ers on 17 August 2017. During the period COVID-19, because of testing positive for COVID-19 Joel has missed nine games.
Since blocks became an official in the 1973-74 season, Joel became the NBA’s first player with 50 points, 10 boards, five assists, and five blocks in a game after the November 2022 season.

Joel Embiid was picked for the World Team for the 2017 Rising Stars Challenge on January 25, 2017.
He was named to the All-NBA Second Team twice in 2018 and 2019. During those same years, he was named to the Second Team All-Defensive. He was a member of the 2017 All-Rookie First Team as well.
He was a starter in the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, making him the first Philadelphian to do so since Allen Iverson was selected as a starter in the 2009-10 season.
