The global network for independent campaigning organizations, Greenspace has joined hands with the activist Benjamin Von Wong for the creation of the striking art installation termed the “Skull of Satoshi” to raise awareness and spark change.
Recent estimates have highlighted that Bitcoin has been using more electricity than Sweden.
The cryptocurrency has lately been causing enormous amounts of pollution, urging Greenspace USA to take immediate action as for a long time, the organization has been fighting with an intention to phase out fossil fuels.
Since the crypto world seems to be intangible, the world was unaware of the climate destruction caused by it, especially Bitcoin. Not only on our climate, but Bitcoin also has a very tangible impact on the communities as well as the environment.
Currently, the world is in a climate crisis and the fingers are unanimously pointed at Bitcoin.
This has triggered Greenspace USA to partner with Von Wong to come up with the Skull of Satoshi, an 11-foot tall provoking installation that represents the cola pollution and fossil fuel generated via Bitcoin mining.
The Skull of Satoshi is featured with a pair of red-lasered eyes adorned with the famous logo of Bitcoin. Multiple cables are seen protruding from its neck.
Moreover, the skull is basically representing millions of computers used for Bitcoin mining and in order to convey that very own message, the artist has made use of electronic waste donated by Urincycle, a unit that recycles outdated IT and computer devices.
In addition to it, the Skull of Satoshi also symbolizes massive climate change brought by Bitcoin mining, and therefore the artistic piece serves as a structure to promote all the financial institutions offering Bitcoin investment and Bitcoin-related products and services to take responsibility for their action.
According to Greenspace Campaigner Rolf Skar, it is high time to take the action to change the code instead of changing the climate. In the wake of the recent climate destruction headlines, Skar said that several “coal-fired power plants are being kept alive” as Bitcoin mining is demanding high electricity for its sustenance.
Given the current global situation, it is a “horrifying development” and Skar asserted that a critical move is expected from the financial institutions that can use their unrivaled influence to suggest a code change.
Furthermore, he added that a potential code change can actually reduce Bitcoin’s current electricity consumption to 99%.
Finally, Skar stated that their skull design portrays a message that “we cannot afford to rely on fossil fuels” anymore and he has left the rest up to the Bitcoin community, the only capable group of people, who can at least advocate for a code change if they are willing to secure a sustainable future for everyone.
By financial institutions, Skar has indirectly pointed at big financial companies like Goldman Sachs, Blackrock, and Fidelity that have both climate goals and major investments in Bitcoin and Bitcoin products.

Currently, it is unknown whether or not they are ready to use their influence to create a more energy-efficient mechanism in solidarity.
The Greenhouse USA and Von Wong are racing out to these finance companies as the reports have announced that the annual gas emissions for Bitcoin are similar to countries like Chile and Ireland.
As per the artist and the supporting organization, the current issue can only be mitigated if Bitcoin is ready to adopt a code that is far from its electricity-intensive and pollution-provoking nature.
They have also invited the attention of the respective authorities to consider the local communities residing next to the mining facilities.
Meanwhile, Von Wong said in a statement that he firmly believes in the ability of arts in sparking unsaid conversations with an ultimate intention to inspire change. As an activist and an artist, the idea to bring awareness to climate destruction on behalf of the entire country was super exciting for him.
“The crypto world has a number of the brightest minds,” he said, and he believes if they can generate enough demand to launch a “sustainable bitcoin,” some genius might hear them and create a less-harmful Bitcoin that can work for everyone. However, his excitement had no limits as Wong was looking ahead to see what Greenspace is about to do with the art installation that he made.
By the end of this month, Greenspace will take the powerful installation on an accountability tour, to invite the traction of major financial institutions that are investing their best in Bitcoin. With the first stop being New York City, the tour is planned to encourage financial companies to urge Bitcoin to finally change its code.
