The 37th annual induction ceremony of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame held on November 5, 2022, at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
Duran Duran, Dolly Parton, Carly Simon, Neil Giraldo, Eurythmics, Eminem, Par Benatar and Lionel Richie were inducted as the performers this year. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, two music producers and writers, were honoured for their musical greatness along with Judas Priest.
Allen Grubman, Jimmy Iovine, and Sylvia Robinson were added to the Ahmet Ertegun Award list, and Harry Belafonte and Elizabeth Cotten received the honorary Early Influences induction.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who worked with everyone from Michael and Janet Jackson to Rod Stewart and Maria Carey, were well known for their canon of pop music as both songwriters and producers.
The Eurythmics, who included singer Annie Lennox and pianist Dave Stewart contributed their talents to the performance on that Saturday night.
After overcoming certain technical issues, Duran Duran delivered a strong performance. Andy Taylor was absent because he was ill and was unable to attend due to his metastatic prostate cancer for the last few years.
During the induction, lead singer Simon LeBon read a statement from Taylor. Along with sharing the stage with Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Lionel Richie Played some of his hits.
The class of 2022 inductees was one of the most diverse in the hall’s history, including artists from hip-hop, country music, R&B, new wave, and soft rock.
Dolly Parton also made headlines when she requested that her nomination be withdrawn because she didn’t believe she had earned the right to be a member. But later she declared she would accept the honour.
Dolly Parton addressed the audience with an opening joke, “ I’m a rockstar now!” and explained how grateful she was to accept the honour.
“ This is a very special night for me. I’m sure a lot of you knew that back when they said they were gonna put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I didn’t really feel like I had done enough to deserve that. And I didn’t understand at that time that it’s about more than that. But I’m just honoured and so proud to be here tonight”: Dolly Parton said.
She performed “Rockin’ Years” and a star-studded version of “Jolene” right after receiving the honour.
“This diverse group of inductees each had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture and helped change the course of Rock and Roll. Their music moved generations and influenced so many artists that followed,” John Sykes, the Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said.
Established in 1983 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was based in Cleveland, Ohio in the United States. Its mission is to preserve the history of some of the most well-known and significant musicians, bands, producers, and other figures who have had a significant impact on the music business, particularly the rock and roll sector.
There were four categories of induction, at the beginning, Lifetime achievement, Early influencers, Performers, and non-performers. The “Sidemen” was added as a category in 2000.
The performer’s category is the only one that has added new members each and every year. The artists who have passed 25 years since their debut record will be the eligible candidates for induction.
An artist must be nominated by a committee that chooses a number of nominees and more than a thousand rock experts are then given ballots to cast their votes on who should be inducted.
In 2021, the 36th annual ceremony of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame took place in Cleveland on October 30.
The inductees of 2021 include Tina Turner, Todd Rundgren, Carole King, Foo Fighters, The Go-Go, and Jay-Z in the performer category and the Early influence inductees were Kraftwerk, Charley Patton, and Gil Scott-Heron.
