Manchester United turned perhaps its best performance of the season, and Cristiano Ronaldo was left on the bench.
After Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Tottenham on Wednesday, Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo went to the locker room before the final whistle. Manager Erik ten Hag indicated he would “deal with” Ronaldo.

United had its best game of the season, and Ronaldo was left on the bench. Ten Hag avoided addressing the issue when asked about it after the game, but the event raised further concerns about the future of the Portugal international.
The Dutchman stated, “I don’t pay attention today. The issue will be addressed the next day. I need everyone’s attention to stay in this group. The eleven players on the field gave a tremendous performance”.
- Ronaldo’s management was not happy with him when he left a preseason match against Rayo Vallecano at halftime.
- Ten Hag called it “unacceptable” but then emphasized that he wasn’t explicitly criticizing Ronaldo, who is now 37 years old.
- Ronaldo has not been able to make much of an impact under Ten Hag thus far this season, as evidenced by his meager two goals in 12 games played.
- His selection on the bench on Wednesday appeared to be additional evidence of Ten Hag’s misgivings about him fitting into his new manager’s high-pressing approach, with Marcus Rashford starting at center forward.
- He remarked, “We need good pushing against this Tottenham.” To increase our chances, we require a strong counter-press. Good pressing players were essential. Marcus can provide some much-needed offensive dynamism.
- The victory, achieved by goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes in the second half, brings United within a single point of the top four.
- Despite Ten Hag’s best efforts to change the subject, Ronaldo was still a hot topic of discussion after the game.
- “I understand his fury, but if you look at the wider picture, his team has put in a terrific performance,” Alan Shearer, a retired player, remarked on Amazon Prime Video. The manager made a tough call, and they turned out to be correct. You’re bringing up a player who might be the best, but it doesn’t make things any easier for the manager.
- “He’ll be questioned on that, but tonight he needs to focus on the players on the field.”
The Amazon analyst Patrice Evra tried to change the subject away from his former United teammate. “People are indeed all different,” he remarked.
Staying focused on United’s success is more important to me than criticizing Cristiano.
Perhaps he informed Ten Hag, “I am going in, and now we’re merely going to portray him strolling in a narrative. Maybe he mentioned that he required medical attention. I don’t mean to make excuses, but we must move from daily discussions on Cristiano to focusing on United’s story”.
Despite his absence, the players celebrated their remarkable victory with a “vibrant” party in the locker room.
Ronaldo’s teammates allegedly “didn’t register” his absence. When Ronaldo walked off the bench and into the tunnel, United manager Erik ten Hag had used only three of his five replacements.
The United manager was also questioned about whether or not Ronaldo, at age 37, had been permitted to leave the field.
The Dutchman responded, “Concerning your question, we deal with that on Thursday, and we have seen 11 players who defend and 11 who attack.”
“The assault had a great deal of movement. I should clarify that there were 12 players involved; I initially said 11. The substitutes who came on did a good job. Ronaldo was criticized for his behavior after being sent off early in Sunday’s goalless draw with Newcastle. He had previously thrown a tantrum against Brentford in August. Even after being replaced at halftime during a preseason match against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford, he left the stadium and returned home”.
