Bebe Cool, a seasoned performer in the genre of dance hall pop music, can now carry himself with a sense of pride after receiving a significant nomination in the Carolina Music awards in the United States.
Bebe Cool, along with a slew of talents from Africa and Asia, was nominated for the best international act.
One of the prizes at the awards ceremony, which will be held on August 11 at the Duke Energy Center of performing Arts in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States, is the opportunity for the victors to perform at the much larger and more celebrated HMMA awards in Hollywood.
Bebe Cool has previously spoken out against local award show organizers, claiming that he is “above” such things, yet he appears to be thrilled with foreign recognition.

Ugandan reggae and ragga artist Bebe Cool (born Moses Ssali, 1 September 1977) is a well-known name on the continent. Around 1997 he began working abroad in Nairobi, Kenya, but after a few years, he returned home. Bebe Cool was an early signee to the Kenyan musical label and production studio Ogopa DJs.

Bebe Cool began his formal education at Aga Khan Primary School in Kampala before moving on to Kitante Hill School and finally Makerere College School, all of which he attended for a total of two years before dropping out. He took PCB/M classes (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics) in high school. Bebe Cool (born Bebe Bunton) began his career as a singer while still a high school student and in the role of entertainment prefect.

Bebe Cool has won multiple awards at the Pearl of Africa Music Awards and the prestigious HiPipo Music Awards, including “Artist of the Year” three times (PAM Awards). On two separate occasions (2003 and 2005), he was considered for the Kora All-African Awards. He has done tours in both the UK and the US. The singles “Fitina” and “Mambo Mingi” are two of his most successful releases to date.
In addition, he recorded a crossover hit with Halima Namakula, an established female musician from Uganda. His two solo efforts, Maisha and Senta, were just released. He sings in Luganda, Swahili, and English in his songs.
Bebe Cool has formed a reggae ensemble called the East African Bashment Crew with the Kenyan duo Necessary Noize. They’ve had success with one album (Fire) and two singles (Africa Unite, and, of course, Fire). There was a nomination for the band at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards.
In 2013, Bebe Cool faced off against D’banj, a prominent musician from Nigeria, in a musical showdown at a neutral venue (Glamis Arena Harare, Zimbabwe). The theme of the show was “Battle for Africa.” Bebe Cool performed admirably in the fight.
In 2014, the Born in Africa remix song by Bebe Cool, a cover of the original by the late Philly Lutaaya, was ranked among Africa’s greatest songs.
