The wait is over!
James Cameron’s blockbuster “Avatar” has announced its second sequel “Avatar: The Way Of Water” release in December in mainland Chinese cinemas.
20th-century studio announced the release on Wednesday through a post on the social media platform Sina Weibo.
Along with other films like the “Minions” franchise and Sony Pictures “Where the Crawdads Sing,” “Avatar: The Way Of Water” is a foreign film that got access to the Chinese market recently.
The film will be released simultaneously with the North American release on December 16.
This is a significant announcement because it is the middle kingdom’s first theatrical release since 2019.
Many foreign films have been banned in China over the years for a variety of reasons, such as depicting the Chinese flag, using Chinese actors, or having filmmakers who have not found favor with the authorities of China.
In the world’s largest film market, Chinese authorities have complete control over the distribution of movies.
Formally, foreign movies can only be released in china through one of two centralized state-owned companies. They are either imported as one of 34 “revenue-share” movies, for which the studio receives a portion of the box office, or in “flat fee”(also known as “buy-out”) terms.
A local company licenses the China rights for a one-time payment and then assumes the risks and benefits of obtaining the work through censorship. Changes to the system and increased participation by China in its WTO responsibilities have stagnated, and little advancement is anticipated in the upcoming year.
The announcement regarding the release of the upcoming American epic science fiction sequel “Avatar: The Way Of Water” is a relief to the Hollywood industry because of the restrictions in China for foreign movies.
Filmmakers are expecting the release of a few foreign movies in the Chinese film market will lead to taking out the control of Chinese authority over Hollywood movies.
“Avatar”, an American media franchise created by James Cameron was a planned series of epic science fiction films produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios.
The Avatar series was one of the most expensive franchises ever launched, with the original movie and its four sequels having a combined budget of one billion dollars.
The sequel to Avatar was released on December 18, 2009, and it is the highest-grossing film of all time.
The four upcoming series like the first movie, “completely encapsulated” independent stories that “come to their own endings.” The four movies are linked together by a grand meta-narrative to form a huge web of interwoven stories.
According to James Cameron, the sequels are natural extensions of all the themes, characters, and spiritual undercurrents of the original movie.
In the upcoming release of the second sequel to the Avatar series “Avatar: The Way Of Water”, Cameron is writing the screenplay along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver based on a story that the three of them co-wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.
Cameron is producing the film along with Jon Landau. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephan Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Geral are the cast members who remain in their roles from the first movie, While a new role is played by Sigourney Weaver. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Brendan Cowell are the new casts who play different roles in the film.
The plot of “Avatar: The Way of Waters” remains largely unknown, however, it is known that it will take place some years after the first and will feature an exploration of Pandora’s oceans.
The movie’s current release date of December 16, 2022, has been postponed multiple times from its initial December 2014 release date. The production began in August 2017 and wrapped in September 2020.
