Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills collapsed on the field during Monday Night’s game against the Bengals and is currently in critical condition in a Cincinnati hospital. The game was later postponed.
Hamlin was injured and was being assisted by athletic trainers after collapsing following a tackle, and other Bills and Bengal players crowded around him in extreme concern.
During the first quarter, Hamlin collided with Bengals receiver Tee Higgins as he was running upfield after making a catch, taking a significant hit to the chest area. After the play, Hamlin stood up before falling to the ground unexpectedly.
Hamlin received CPR on the field. He was taken from the field to the hospital 15 minutes after his collapse. Without providing an immediate update on when or whether the game would be played, ESPN announced on the broadcast a little after 10 pm.ET that it had been suspended for the evening.
A statement released by the NFL mentioned that Hamlin was in critical condition at a nearby hospital. Later, Stephon Diggs joined Hamlin at the hospital.
One block from the emergency hospital entrance, about 100 Bills and Bengals fans assembled on a corner, some of them holding candles.
Jordan Rooney, supposedly Hamlin’s market representative, updated on his Twitter that his vitals of Hamlin are back to normal and a breathing tube is put down his throat. He added that the medics are running tests on him.
The 24-year-old Hamlin attended Pittsburgh, his hometown, for five years of college. As a senior, he was selected to participate in the Senior Bowl, earned a spot on the second-team All-ACC, and was elected as team captain.
He was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 2021 NFL Draft. He appeared in 14 games as a rookie and then started his play after Micah Hyde went down with an injury.
Injuries and collapsing are not new things to football players. Football, basketball, and soccer have witnessed lots of players getting injured and collapsing mid-game. A few of the players who had collapsed during the game had a tragic death.
Hank Gathers and Chuck Hughes are two of the players who had a terrible death during the game.
Hank Gathers played college basketball for the Loyola Marymount Lions in the West Coast Conference from February 11, 1967, until March 4, 1990.
Gathers collapsed during an LMU home game with UC Santa Barbara on December 9, 1989. He had an irregular heartbeat and was then medicated and survived the health condition.
On Sunday, March 4, 1990, during the first half of the semifinal game against Portland Pilots, Gather once more passed out. Later it was declared that Gather had died at a local hospital. The cause of the death was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a health condition also known as a heart-muscle disorder.
American football player Charles Federick Hughes, better known as Chuck Hughes, played wide receiver in the National Football League from 1967 to 1971. He is the only NFL player to have passed away on the field while playing to this point.
At Tiger Stadium on October 24, 1971, the Lions played host to the Chicago Bears. Hughes replaced an injured player and entered the game. During the game, around the 20-yard line, he fell to the ground holding his chest.
He started to shake violently after collapsing into the ground. He was taken to the hospital and had given treatment. But later, the Lions heard the news of their teammate’s death after the match.

Hughes had a family history of heart disease, and a postmortem report indicated that he had untreated severe arteriosclerosis, that is one of his coronary arteries was 75% clogged.
A coronary thrombosis, which resulted in a severe myocardial infarction and cut off the blood supply to his heart, was the direct cause of his death.
As we said earlier Gather and Hughes were two sports players who died during a play. Certain players survived such collapses and injuries. Christian Ericksen is one of the soccer players who survived the health condition that caused his collapse on the field. He returned to the field strongly after a few months.
Christian Ericksen is a professional soccer player from Denmark. He competes for the Denmark national team and Premier League club Manchester United as a midfielder.
In 2021 June, Eriksen went into cardiac arrest due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The collapse happened when he was playing in a UEFA Euro 2020 match. He received CPR and was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. He returned to playing soccer after eight months. Eventually, he joined Manchester United.
Damar Hamlin is in critical condition right now. But we can hope that he will return healthy and strong as Ericksen returns to the field.
All the NFL followers are looking forward to the update on Hamlin. Let’s hope for the best!
