Dan Markel, law professor was shot dead on July 29, 2014. Donald Weidner, dean of FSU College of law, expressed his grief due to the murder of Professor Dan, and wanted to support Dan’s family at the time of difficulty.
The news that turned out to be a hard bite to swallow, is that behind the death of Dan Markel was no other than his family member from his in-laws side. Dan Markel’s brother-in-law Charlie Adelson is said to have been behind it due to the issue of the divorce of Dan and his wife and emotional matters.
What Happened to Charlie Adelson?
The Tallahassee Democrat reported Adelson’s relocation from the “Leon County Detention Facility to the custody of the Florida Department of Corrections,” in December 2023.
Charlie was taken into custody on November 6 after 8 days trial. Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett sentenced him to life imprisonment for first-degree murder and 30 years to run consecutively for conspiracy and solicitation.
In his defence Charlie Adelson said, “I would just like to say that I maintain my innocence,” said Markel to the court, via CBS News
Who are the People Involved in Dan Markel’s Murder?
As it is clear Charlie Adelson is involved in the murder of his brother in law, Dan Markel, Charlie took help of his girlfriend Katherine Magbanua, who hired Sigfredo Garcia, the father of her two children, to commit the crime. Sigfredo Garcia took help of his childhood friend Luis Rivers to make the murder plan successful.
All these murderers are caught;both Katherine and Garcia are sentenced to life imprisonment, on the other hand Rivera got 19 year sentence for helping the culprits.
Charlie’s mother Donna Adelson was also involved in the vicious plan. It started when the couple, Dan and his ex-wife were in a battle to take the custody of their two children after divorce, where Donna was available to see everything and she did not want her grandchildren to shift from Tallahassee to South Florida.
In order to get rid of Dan, Donna helped in execution of the plan her son Charlie had made.
After Dan’s murder, Donna and her husband were caught at the airport, as they were heading towards Vietnam, and police saw that they had one way ticket. To add to that, Vietnam does not have and deed as Extradition treaty signed with the United States.
The police caught Donna and her husband from Miami international airport. It was also known that during a jailhouse call with her son Charlie, Donna told him that she was leaving the country.
ABC News released recordings of their calls wherein Donna is heard saying, “We’ve been looking it up over and over, because things change,” she said to Adelson after his conviction.
“If there is extradition from Vietnam? Because we, we’ve looked at all the places, I mean, I could go to Korea and China, but there’s no extradition, but looking for places where there’s no extradition.” Due to inclement weather, her hearing has been rescheduled to Jan. 30, 2024.
