During his early days, Doug’s father used to work as an assistant basketball coach at the University of North Dakota. Currently, he is the coach for the Creighton Bluejays Men’s basketball team.
Doug attended Ames high school, Iowa and it was where he officially started his career in basketball. During his high school days, Doug used to play alongside Harrison Barnes, who was a high school All-American.
Both Doug and Barnes together guided their team to many victories and the Ames team was able to win almost 53 consecutive games during their season.

After his high school career, it was sure that Doug was going to make it in basketball as a great player. So, he decided to follow his dreams and basketball was his major focus for him during his college days. Being a student who was brought up around Iowa, Doug initially decided to play with the team of Northern Iowa and he even signed a National Letter of Intent to express his commitment.
During that time, his father used to work with Iowa State University as their football coach. As Greg McDermott joined Creighton as their coach and left Iowa, Doug was also released from his agreement so that he could play for Creighton.
Just like his high school career, Doug was also able to perform well with his new college team. During his first season, Doug was named conference freshman and also the newcomer of the year.
Repeating his excellent performance throughout his sophomore year, Doug became the top-ranked player in the nation for points scored and second in points per game during his junior year.
Doug ended his college career on high notes. He holds the record for being the first player in 29 years who was named AP All-America’s first team three times. He also holds the record for scoring the fifth-highest score in the history of NCAA Division I games.
Doug McDermott – Professional Career
Doug McDermott made his official entry into a professional basketball career in the 2014-15 season. As a proven field talent, Doug was the 11th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. First, he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets but Doug was traded to Chicago Bulls on draft night.
But Doug was not able to bring out his best performance in his debut season, and later, he was ruled out due to a knee injury. But he was able to make a comeback through his next season with the team.
After the needed rest and treatment for his knee injury, Doug re-joined the team in 2015 and he was able to rise to earlier expectations through his game. This good performance also gave him an extension in his deal with the team through the 2016-17 season
During his following season, Doug McDermott played with many different teams for each season and as each game passed, Dough was able to raise the standard of his games. In February 2017, Doug was traded and joined the Oklahoma City Thunder and in March, he had his height-scoring game with the Thunders.
In the same year, Doug was traded to the New York Knicks. In his debut season with the Knicks, Doug and his team lost to his former team, the Oklahoma City Thunders.
In February 2018, Doug was acquired by the Dallas Mavericks. Even though he received a qualifying offer from the team, it was withdrawn later. In July 2018, Doug signed a three-year contract with the Indiana Pacer, and the contract was reported to be worth $22 million.
Doug Joined his current team, the San Antonio Spurs in 2021 through a sign-and-trade deal. In March 2022, Doug encountered an injury on his right ankle.
The injury was then reported to be slightly serious and he had to stay off the court for the rest of the season. Recent reports say that Doug is expected to make a comeback to the game, where he will be a part of the team for the next game.

With his commendable skill and moves on the court, Doug was able to make it into the national basketball team which represented the United States in the FIBA Under-19 World Championship in 2011. The tournament took place in Riga, Latvia.
