Where is Candy Montgomery Today?

There was much shocking evidence against Candy Montgomery, but no one could send her to jail. She became nationally known after she killed her friend over the affair she was having with her husband. She never served jail time for the murder of Betty Gore, and reportedly, Candy Montgomery today is in Georgia.

Recently, a show on HBO Max released on April 27, 2023, stirred the conversation surrounding this spine-chilling case. Earlier, the Hulu miniseries titled Candy, released on May 9, 2022, brought the incident back into people’s minds.

Although different in execution, both programs break down the details surrounding what exactly happened. What caused the clash between Montgomery and her friend, Betty Gore, has kept everyone thinking.

Where is Candy Montgomery Today?

But, whatever the reality and wherever we stand in this decade-old debatable case, we all are very curious to know where is Candy Montgomery today. No matter how shocking it might sound to anyone, the reality is that she was not found guilty in the case.

Although there was ample evidence against her, she still wasn’t convicted. Many believe that she was able to get away with murder by claiming that she killed Gore in an act of self-defence. She was acquitted of all charges brought against her and relocated to Georgia with her family after the trial.

Now, it is quite inevitable to outrun your past. The same happened in Candy’s case, too. Her marriage fell apart soon after they relocated, and Candy and her husband, Pat, got divorced. She now goes by her maiden name, Wheeler. In terms of her career, one might be surprised to learn that she works as a mental health therapist for teens and adults.

What Happened and Why was She Acquitted?

What Happened and Why was She Acquitted?

Although there was ample evidence against her, she still wasn’t convicted. Montgomery struck Gore with an axe. She did it in a moment of anger after being confronted about her affair with Gore’s husband. But, the unusual detail about the supposedly accidental killing is the fact that Gore’s body was discovered with a total of 41 axe wounds.

Montgomery was a well-liked member of her community. She was a housewife and mother of two children in the suburban town of Wylie, Texas. Her husband, Pat, worked as an electrical engineer. He provided a stable lifestyle for his family.

She was an avid churchgoer. She struck up her friendship with Gore during Sunday services. She started pursuing an affair with Gore’s husband, Allan. It happened after she saw him play at a church volleyball game.

Montgomery had been talking about having an affair to shake up her now-turned-boring marriage with Pat. She certainly got her way. After she and Allan devised a plan, complete with rules and boundaries to avoid emotional attachment with one another, their tryst lasted for months.

But even though they were committed to stepping out of their respective marriages. Montgomery and Allan maintained that they still wanted to remain married to their respective spouses. His wife was even pregnant during the time of their affair.

How Did it Lead To The Final Blow?

Gore began putting the pieces together once she gave birth to their child. She was convinced her husband no longer loved her. Gore eventually figured out that Allan was having an affair with Montgomery. Gore decided to confront her supposed friend.

Unfortunately, that confrontation led to her death. But the fact is that the details of this case seem quite clear-cut. This is why it is so difficult to understand how Montgomery was not convicted of murder.

Candy confessed that she had killed Betty but claimed that she’d done so in self-defence. The defence quickly pointed to the fact that Betty had been sliced 41 times with the axe.

This far exceeded the necessary force Candy should have used in self-defence. But Candy claimed that she had been experiencing a kind of dissociative state as the result of childhood trauma. She said that Betty had shushed her. This triggered a memory of her abusive mother that sent her into a violent rage.

It was a hypnotist hired by her defence team who uncovered this repressed memory.  Acquitted in a vicious murder, Candy Montgomery is now a psychotherapist, which is yet another shocker.
