Character.AI, the virtual human likely chatbot companion of millions is down and netizens around the globe are enraged. As of the latest update, nobody is able to access the website or use it to connect with the chatbot characters.
It is known that the website is down because of the uncontrollable increase in the number of users that is on a hike with each passing day.
On visiting the website, the message that is shown says, due to continually increasing usage, the services of the website have recently become unstable and it is decided to put the site in maintenance mode while the further services are scaled.
The website is also displaying the message, that reads, they are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to all the passionate users and there is also an assurance that read the entire team was working hard to fully restore services as soon as possible.
The overloaded servers of the website are unable to get back on track and wait for an update from the developers.

Character.ai is primarily a chatbot. The website functions as a platform for the users to create their own characters and to talk with the characters.
The user can attribute particular characteristics and features to the character which would then talk back like how a human character would do with assigned qualities.

The chatbot web application was launched on September 16, 2022. The founders of the AI chatterbot are Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas. Noam Shazeer was earlier a software engineer at Google and now acts as the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Character.AI.
He had graduated from Duke University. He is an expert in the field of AI and the one behind most of the current large language models in use. His contributions include the Transformer (2017), Sparsely-gated Mixture of Experts (2016), Mesh-Tensorflow (2018), and the T5 (2019).
Daniel De Freitas is a Creative Marketing and Communications professional having served as the Culture Manager at the London, UK office of Red Bull, an energy drink.
He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, Social Sciences from Northumbria University. He is currently serving as the President of Character.AI.
Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas worked together in the LaMDA dialog system of Google, Language Model for Dialogue Applications.
How To Use Character.AI?
The user has to visit the official website of the Character.AI. Upon visiting the website, a registration window would appear on the screen. The step of registration is optional as the process is only required to remove certain limits.
The users are provided the option to fabricate their own characters. Such created characters could be released to the community so that anyone can use them.
Most of the characters found on the website are built by adapting the traits of fictional or mythological personalities or real-life personalities. Characters that have nothing in common with any of these categories can also be given form owing to the pure creativity of the user.
There are a bunch of super useful characters that can add to the productivity of the user and can impart knowledge that can also be used as an educational tool. Such characters that could be found on the website are the ones aiding adventure games that are text-based, creative writing, academic writing, or science learning.
The user can at a time, text with a single character, as well they can arrange group chats that could contain a variety of characters. The created characters can chat between themselves or with the user. The user can converse with a group of characters.
What Does Character.AI Actually Do?
The user can attribute specific personality traits to the character through descriptions from the perspective with respect to the character and can customize a greeting message too. This message would be sent as a response by the character each time a conversation is initiated.
The beta version of the software was released in the September of the last year and it is the version that is still available for usage.

How To Fix The Character.AI?
The masterminds behind the website have not yet provided a complete solution to the issue. Users are advised to try refreshing the webpage as the errors could be fixed at any moment.
Some other users of the website have suggested, opening the platform after turning on the incognito mode in the web browser which would clear the website caches and cookies.
Some other users also tried to access the website by using a VPN (virtual private network) service from a different location.
Has Character AI Gone Down Before?
The Character.AI chatbot has gone down before the present error. It was in the December of 2022. The previous episode of going down was also due to an increased volume of visits and uncontrollable traffic to the website.
Although in December the developers were able to get it back on track within a few hours.
