The 77-year-old NASA scientist employed in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for over 35 years was a brilliant brain and a true source of inspiration for those who aspire to achieve excellence in science. His contributions to space exploration are impressive, and his legacy goes beyond the scope.

Who is Firouz Naderi?

Firouz Naderi is a well-known Iranian American scientist with numerous management and technical positions in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Further, he made significant contributions to developing the nation’s robotic space exploration.

His place of birth was the South Iranian City of Shiraz from 1946 to 1947, and then he moved to the USA when he was approximately 18 years old. He was a director at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Naderi’s job at NASA was not without its challenges. He was injured in 2023 and sustained a severe injury that left him completely paralyzed. Even after the event, Naderi continued to inspire and inspire younger generations of researchers and scientists. In an interview post his accident, Naderi spoke about how he believed that change was the natural course of things and that we should adapt to it to progress. His determination and perseverance are inspiring to others who face similar obstacles and challenges throughout their life.

NASA named an Asteroid within the solar system in honor of his name a few years ago as he said, “It will be going around the Sun for billions of years after I’m gone.”

Unfortunately, the renowned scientist Firouz Naderi passed away at 77 after suffering a severe neck injury.

Naderi was born on March 3, 1946, in Shiraz. He attended the elementary school in his hometown; however, Naderi moved to Tehran for admission at the famous high school in the city. His parents took him to an Italian boarding school, Don Bosco.

The renowned scientist graduated in electrical engineering from Iowa State University. After graduating from high school, Firouz Naderi immigrated to the U.S.

After earning his bachelor’s degree, he worked as an engineer in Santa Barbara for two years. After that, he furthered his Education and obtained his master’s degree and Ph.D. at The University of Southern California.

Then Firouz Michael Naderi went again to Iran and was sentenced to two years of mandatory military service. He eventually fled from Iran permanently in 1978.

One of the hilarious incidents that have happened to us scientists is when, according to Firouz Naderi, he narrates, “After the University, I was in the stadium watching a game of baseball. I was holding an ice cream sandwich with one hand and an iced drink in the other when one famous player hit the ball with his foot, struck me, and damaged my nostril.” The accident occurred on the very same day as he was in the defense of his dissertation.

When he first arrived in his first U.S., Naderi began working for NASA as an engineer in the system. In actuality the fact that he was an employee at JPL. Since the beginning, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has been the highest quality laboratory located in Pasadena, California.

One of JPL’s primary missions is to create and launch unmanned projectiles that launch them for as long as possible, including outside of the solar system.

Firouz Naderi worked at JPL for more than 35 years. He held various positions as an engineer for systems, director of development for technologies, project manager, director of astronomical physics experiments, and director of planetary systems.

What Happened to Firouz Naderi?

Many of you are curious to know what happened to Naderi.

Dr. Naderi underwent a life-altering incident two weeks ago that left him paralyzed from his neck down. He fell in a dangerous manner as well as suffering a heart episode. This caused his neck injury to seriously affect his spinal cord, which resulted in paralysis from his neck down.

Doctors estimated four to five months of recuperation following two surgeries in succession and recovery. On the 9th of June, the deceased’s family members took to their social accounts on Twitter to share the news of his sudden death. The internet flooded with tributary messages after the news of Naderi’s death.

The STEM community and those whom Naderi’s inspirational life has touched offered condolences and bid him farewell by sending heartfelt messages. 

The death of Dr. Firouz Naderi, who was NASA’s director of the Mars Exploration Programme, and the successful landing of the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity was a shock. It shocked the Iranian people around the world. He persisted in providing Iran with an access point to the public internet.

Firouz Naderi’s career and life remained extraordinary. He reshaped the rules of space exploration, and his work has inspired many generations. His determination and perseverance in the face of hardship and difficulties he encountered in his lifetime are testaments of his strength and tenacity. Naderi’s legacy will encourage young researchers and scientists in the coming years. Rest in peace, dear Firouz Naderi.
