The match between the U.S. and Iran on Tuesday saw the victory of the Stares over Iran but the win came at a greater cost for the USMNT. In the game, the team was able to defeat Iran for a score of 1 – 0 and move a step closer to their dream of becoming the strong and better team that they focus on. One of the best players on the team, Christian Pulisic was able to score the winning point for his team in the 38th minute of the game.
Players are known for their different styles or ways of celebrating after scoring a goal, and Pulisic is also known for some iconic moves like the Griddy, the worm, and also the ‘Man in the Mirror’ move which he does to celebrate a goal. But the match on Tuesday did not see any such moves or celebrations from him or from any of his teammates, as the winning goal came at the price of severe injury to the player.
Pulisic was determined all through, to not miss the opportunity to score a goal for his team. In order to make the most of the headed cross from Sergiño Dest, Pulisic had to sprint at full speed to reach the ideal spot.
Charging in with such speed toward the target, the collision between Pulisic and the 6’4 Alireza Beiranvand, the goalkeeper for the Iranian team was unavoidable. The collision resulted in severe injury to the player and not only did he lose the rest of the match, but it also is not sure whether he will be able to recover from the injury and make it for the team’s next game.
The moments after the collision, which resulted in the winning goal for the team, Pulisic spent it in severe pain. Instead of running in for the celebration of the brilliant goal, his teammates rushed to him out of their concern for his well-being. After losing the remaining match, Pulisic was taken to the team hotel on The Pearl and then he was taken to a hospital where he received the needed medical care.
According to reports, the player suffered from a ‘pelvic contusion’, and details about his stage or the time is taken for his recovery are also not clearly mentioned by the team officials.
The second half of the game was even close as team Melli was desperate for a win to ensure their chances of advancing. The fact that even just a draw could help them in achieving it made the team more aggressive and stronger in trying their best. But the efforts were in vain as they failed to score a point against the USMNT.
The coach of the U.S. team Gregg Berhalter was heavily appreciated after the game, as the win and the progress they have made as a team in this year’s World Cup is the result of his tiresome effort and training.
In the press conference after the match coach, Berhalter said that it was the end of the game that he was most proud of as a coach.
According to him, the end of the match was a mark of determination and showcased an extreme amount of effort and resilience from the team to hang in there and achieve the victory that they aimed for. He also added that it was the first time in 92 years that the American team has received two shoutouts at a World Cup and that meant that the players were doing something right.
The coach also shared that knowing that even a draw could be an advance for the Iranian team added much more pressure on the players before going in but they were able to overcome their pressure and make a historic win in the tournament.
The American team will now face off against the Netherlands in their next game. The Netherlands is also a strong team with a history of being the World Cup runner-up three times.
The teams come eighth in the FIFA rankings. The American team who played their last game with one of the youngest starting lineups in the World Cup moves on to their next game with the confidence and lessons that they gained from their match against team Iran.
