Is there going to be a fourth season of Hulu’s funny historical show “The Great,” which tells the story of Catherine the Great’s ascent to power in Russia?
“The Great” on Hulu turned Russian history into a witty comedy. People loved it when it started in 2020. It’s about Catherine the Great (played by Elle Fanning) becoming Empress of Russia and her difficult relationship with her husband, Peter III (Nicholas Hoult).
The show is famous for its smart writing and great acting. It takes history and makes it funny, even if it’s not entirely accurate. The humor is the best part and makes Catherine the Great a unique character.
Hulu, known for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” entered the world of original content. “The Great” stands out because of its unique style. It’s not like other historical shows that can be quite serious. Instead, it’s vibrant and keeps you hooked from beginning to end. While some parts are true to history, it’s intentionally not strictly historical, which leads to intriguing twists.
The Great Season 4 Latest News
The latest update on “The Great” is quite surprising and disappointing. Hulu has decided to cancel the show after three seasons. Even though Elle Fanning had discussed future directions for the show, Hulu chose to conclude it with the death of Nicholas Hoult’s character, Peter III.
“The Great” had won Emmy awards, making the cancellation puzzling, but Hulu hasn’t provided any reasons. The season ended with Catherine taking control of the court, despite Peter’s death being a significant event in her life.
Elle Fanning, when discussing the potential for a Season 4 of “The Great,” had some intriguing thoughts. She mentioned that in Season 2, Catherine’s pregnancy served as a safeguard because no one would harm her while she was carrying the heir.
However, with Paul’s birth, Catherine now views the baby as her adversary. These ideas had fans excited for another season as there was clearly more to explore in Catherine’s story. Unfortunately, with the cancellation of “The Great” Season 4, this next phase of her life won’t be explored.
The Great Season 4 Has Been Canceled
Despite its strong popularity, Hulu decided to cancel “The Great” Season 4. Hulu doesn’t often share viewership numbers, but the show’s three-season run reflects its success. Unfortunately, the decision to cancel likely came quickly after Season 3.
Season 1 premiered in May 2020, and the renewal for Season 2 was announced just a few months later in July. Season 3 came out on May 12, 2023, and by the end of August, it was confirmed that there wouldn’t be a Season 4. While there’s a chance another network could pick it up, there’s been no news about any interested buyers, including HBO.
The Great Season 4 Release Date
Streaming series like “The Great” have the advantage of flexible production schedules to enhance quality. However, this means Season 4, if it ever happens, might not follow the same yearly release pattern.
Going by the timeline of previous seasons, it’s unlikely that Season 4 would arrive at the same time of year as Season 3. It’s more probable that it could align with Season 2, which had a longer gap after Season 1. If “The Great” finds a new home, the earliest we might see Season 4 could be late 2024.
The Great Season 4 Cast
If another network picks up “The Great” for Season 4, the only guaranteed returning character is Catherine. Surprisingly, Nicholas Hoult, who played Peter III and another character, won’t be back because both of his characters died in the last season.
Similarly, Sacha Dhawan, who portrayed Orlo, also won’t return because his character died. The show’s focus on Catherine and Peter’s relationship takes precedence over strict historical accuracy.
For “The Great” Season 4, it’s highly likely that familiar faces like Phoebe Fox (Mariel), Gwilym Lee (Grigor), Adam Godley (Archie), Belinda Bromilow (Aunt Elizabeth), and Douglas Hodge (General Velementov) will return to their roles.
Charity Wakefield, who plays Georgina and is scheming to take over the throne, should also be back. Bayo Gbadamosi (Arkady) and Florence Keith-Roach (Tatyana) might return as well.
On a Wrap
“The Great” Season 4, if it happens, is likely to see Catherine as the central character, while some familiar faces might return, although key characters like Peter III and Orlo won’t be back due to their character deaths. The show’s focus on humor and its unique take on history has garnered a dedicated fan base, and viewers can anticipate more witty and entertaining storytelling if the series continues.
