Friday at midnight, the 34-year-old nine-time Grammy Award winner released the new song from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, her first new solo music since 2016’s Anti. Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up,” a dedication to Chadwick Boseman, is her first solo release since her 2016 album Anti.
“Lift Me Up” By Rihanna: A New Song For Black Panther Fans To Sing Along To!
This song is on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever album and is a memorial to the late actor Chadwick Boseman. In August 2020, at age 43, the Black Panther actor passed away from colon cancer.
“Lift me up/Hold me down/Keep me close/Safe and sound/Burning in a hopeless dream/Hold me when you go to sleep/Keep me in the warmth of your love/When you depart, keep me safe/Safe and sound” Rihanna sings in the chorus, clearing referencing Boseman’s passing.
The track, which was produced by composer Ludwig Göransson, is co-written by Rihanna and director Ryan Coogler along with Nigerian singer Tems.
Tems says after meeting with Ryan and hearing his vision for the film and the song, she was inspired to compose a piece that depicts a loving hug from the folks she had lost over her life and that she imagined how it would feel to sing to them and explain how much she missed them.
She says it is a real honor to hear Rihanna perform this song as she has been an influence on her.
Rihanna teased the song multiple times earlier in the week, then on Thursday, accompanied by a black-and-white image, she announced the song’s release date.
She and her boyfriend A$AP Rocky attended the Los Angeles premiere of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on Wednesday, days before the song’s release. It was the couple’s first red carpet-appearance after the birth of their first child, a son, in May.
“Lift Me Up” has been a long time coming for Fenty Beauty founder Rihanna’s fans, who have not heard new solo music from her since Anti, her seventh studio album. However, she appeared in “Believe It” by PARTYNEXTDOOR in 2020 and “Lemon” by N.E.R.D. in 2017.
The “Work” singer told Vogue in May that Anti is still her “greatest album to date” and that she has no plans to compete with it while she creates new music.
It remains to be seen what else Rihanna has up her sleeve for early next year, but she is scheduled to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Showing his support of the decision, JAY-Z, the founder of Roc Nation, remarked that Rihanna is a generational talent, and a woman who has from humble circumstances who has consistently exceeded expectations.
Rihanna was born in the small island of Barbados, but is today one of the most recognized artists in history and also independently wealthy in business and entertainment.
Shortly after the news, Rihanna was photographed entering a New York City music studio.
