Iam Tongi was crowned as the season 21 winner of ABC’s hit singing reality show American Idol on Sunday. The reality show is one of the most popular and long-running shows on television.
The finale of the competition took place on Sunday and it was a three-hour long event and what made the live event even more glamorous was the presence of different celebrities. The live finale aired on ABC and the event was hosted by famous television personality Ryn Seacrest.
‘You did it. You’re the idol.’ Ryan Seacrest could not control his enthusiasm and excitement while announcing Iam Tongi as the winner of the 21st season of the singing reality show, which has been running for over two decades.
The winner was chosen based on their performance on the show, along with the votes that they received from viewers across the country.
Im Tongi, who is currently 18 years old, is from Hawaii and is a high school student. Excited, Iam performed the song ‘Don’t Let Go’ by Spawnbreezie after being announced as the winner, and his family and friends enjoyed and cheered him on from the audience.
Following the announcement, the remaining contestants in the Top 12 ran to the stage to hug Tongi and congratulate him on his achievement and they also joined him in singing the song together.
The finale of the 21st season of American Idol was a great treat and the level of entertainment was over the roof. The three-hour-long finale was kicked off with an electrifying performance by Pitbull and at one point, the host of the show Ryan Seacrest joined Pitbull on the stage.
Along with the top 12 contestants, the three judges of the show Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan also made it even more glamorous through their stunning looks and presence.
Along with the superstar judges, the finale also included performances from different artists like Kylie Minogue, MLainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, James Blunt, Keith Urban, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Lauren Daigle, TLC, REO Speedwagon, and Jazmine Sullivan.
Along with being a performer for the night, Keith Urban also served as the mentor for the top three contestants on the finale, Iam, Colin Stough, and Megan Danielle. Keith met with the contestants individually and gave them the necessary support.
The top three contestants sang two different songs on stage. One was a song by Keith and another was a song in tribute to their hometown. Tongi chose to perform ‘Cool Down’ by Kolohe Kai as his tribute to his hometown Kahuku in Hawaii.
Judge Katy Perry commented on Iam Tongi’s performance by saying ‘Iam, you are the culture, welcome to paradise, my friend.’ Following this performance, Iam Tongi and Megan Danielle were announced as the top two contestants of the show.
For their final head-to-head performance, the contestant chose their original songs. Following their final round of performances, 19-year-old Megan Danielle from Douglasville, Georgia became the runner-up of the show, making Iam Tongi the winner of the 21st season of American Idol.

The journey of Iam Tongi on the show saw a very beautiful transformation of an 18-year-old boy into a budding and promising artist for the future. Right from his audition, Tongi captured the hearts of the judges and the audiences alike.
The 18-year-old high school student from Hawaii chose the song ‘Monsters’ by James Blunt for his audition and the performance was an instant hit. His performance for the audition was the most viewed audition of the season, crossing a 16 million view mark on YouTube.
Tongi dedicated his audition performance to his father, who passed away a couple of months before his audition. He also said that his father was his inspiration and also the reason that Tongi got into music. The emotional audition and Tongi’s rendering of the dong left judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan in tears.
The whole journey throughout the show was Tongi’s emotional tribute that he paid his father. In one of his meetings with the producers of the show, Tongi also said that it was his father’s wish that he auditioned for the show.
All throughout the show. Tongi performed a wide range of different songs that beautifully showcased his musical abilities and his skills to master any song that he takes up.
Some of his most notable performances include popular songs like ‘Father and Son’ by Cat Stevens, ‘Bring It On’ by Sam Cooke, and also ‘Sound of Silence’ by Simon and Garfunkel.
Iam Tongi completed his primary education at Kahuku High & Intermediate School. Currently, he is a student at Washington’s Decatur High School and has also released several singles at such a young age.
One of his first singles released by Iam Tongi was named ‘Dreams’ and his most recent single released was titled ‘I’ll be seeing you.’
