Benjamin Millepied is a French choreographer and dancer who has worked in the United States since 1995.
Benjamin was born on June 10, 1977, in Bordeaux, France. He is youngest among his three brothers. His mother, Catherine Flory, was a ballet dancer with whom Benjamin started training at the age of eight. At the age of 13, he studied at the Conservatoire National, Lyon, with Michel Rahn.
Benjamin Millepied’s Career
In 1992, Benjamin attended the School of American Ballet. He returned to full-time studies in 1993, where he got a scholarship from the French Ministry. Benjamin got a chance to be mentored by choreographer Jerome Robbins at an early stage in his career.
Benjamin joined the New York City Ballet in 1995. He got promoted to soloist in 1998; he then became a principal dancer in 2002. In 2011, it was announced by the media that Millepied would retire from the New York City Ballet.
After retiring from New York City Ballet in 2011, Benjamin founded L.A. Dance Project. The company’s budget for operations is planned to be about $1 million per year. In 2014, the project announced its new venue, the Theatre at Ace Hotel.
In 2016, Benjamin accepted the position of director at the Paris Opera Ballet. He has worked with many composers in his career like David Lang, Nico Muhly, Daniel Ott, and Philip Glass. He has served as a choreographer in works such as Black Swan.
His Relationship
Benjamin was dating Isabella Boylston, but he left her when Millepied met Natalie Portman on the sets of The Black Swan in 2009. Portman is an actress, and the couple got married in California in 2012.
They have two children together, a son and a daughter. The family lives in Paris. But the couple got divorced after 12 years of marriage in March 2024.
