Weddings, Guns, fun, grenades, pirates, and hostages along with Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Coolidge, what else can you ask for in a romantic action comedy film? Yes! We are talking about none other than the recent release of Amazon Prime Video, the Jennifer Lopez, and Josh Duhamel starring movie ‘Shotgun Wedding.’
Even though the movie was released in Singapore in December 2022, fans elsewhere had to wait almost another month for the release of the movie before finally being dropped on Amazon Prime Video on January 27, 2023.
As per sources by many Shotgun Wedding movie review analysts, the movie is not seen or reported as an aground breaker hit, the Jason Moore-directed venture is said to induce a good amount of light and feature enough elements to thrill the audience and keep them entertained, which is the ultimate goal of a film.
The tropical island setting and the confusion, fear, and laughter of a wedding setting, with the addition of stars like Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Coolidge, who absolutely stole the show, is destined to keep people entertained and also a good movie to kick start this year’s movie journey.
Before The Release
Even though the film was just released, the announcement regarding the movie came out first almost four years back, on January 29, 2019, to be exact.
During the announcement, nothing much was revealed except for the director Jason Moore, screenplay writer Mark Hammer and also the main actor, Ryan Reynolds. Yes, you heard it right.
Initially, the team had Ryan Reynolds in their mind to play the role of Tom, played by Josh Duhamel. After Reynolds failed to join the cast, the part went to Armie Hammer but as the abuse allegations against him broke loose, the role finally landed on Josh Duhamel, which was announced two years later, in 2021.
While Jennifer Lopez joined the cast as the lead role in 2020, remaining actors like Jennifer Coolidge, Sonia Braga Lenny Kravitz, Cheech Marin, D’Arcy Carden, and a few more were announced officially in 2021 as part of the film.
While the movie was originally scheduled to start shooting in the summer of 2019, it was further rescheduled and the filming finally started on February 22, 2021.
Rescheduling and changing decisions not only affected the casting and the shooting bu8t even the release of the movie was affected by such changes. The movie which was released through the OTT platform Amazon Prime Videos was first intended as a theatrical release.
Initially, Lionsgate was supposed to release the movie through theaters in June 2022, the right was bought by Amazon Studios which finally led to the release of the movie on Amazon Prime Video On January 27, 2023.
Shotgun Wedding – The Plot
Just like the title suggests, the movie follows the vent that develops surrounding a wedding. While normal weddings are flowers, cakes, and happiness, Shotgun Wedding takes us into a confused and scary wedding but still somehow comes out as funny and entertaining.
The main plot of the movie is the wedding of Darcy and Tom played by Lopez and Duhamel, which takes place on a remote private island, which seems to be much far from the mainland ( for the purpose of the storyline as people have trouble receiving reception on their cell phones.)
The movie starts off on the night of their wedding reception. Just like a normal wedding, Daryc and Tom try their best to manage their families and the wedding chaos but everyone is thrown off by the sudden appearance of Darcy’s ex-finance Sean.
Sean arrives at the island in a helicopter and it was Darcy’s father who secretly invited Sean to the wedding. How will it be if your ex-fiance decides to make a surprise appearance at your wedding? The same goes for Darcy and she is faced with a jealous Tom who is very keen to know about the past history of Darcy and Sean.
But Sean appears to be a lesser problem when the wedding party is surrounded by a gang of pirates the next day and every one of their guests is taken as a hostage.
The pirates demand money from Darcy’s rich father but luckily, the couples-to-be escape from the capture, and what follows is a series of chaotic, thrilling, action, and comedy-filled roller coaster as the couple tries to fight off the villains and go ahead with their marriage.

What We Think Of Shotgun Wedding
While there had been many different movies that have discussed similar plots like the Shotgun Wedding, the movie is quite an entertaining one, which is the prime aim of such a creation. Shotgun Wedding.
Even though the movie promises good laughter and excitement, it has got been recognized or reported to be a groundbreaking hit by the audience. The Shotgun Wedding movie review by critics are also mixed.
One of the main reasons for this is the somewhat familiar plot set by the film. A chaotic wedding is something that we have all seen earlier in many different films earlier and also the added drama and tension caused by the surprise entry of an ex-companion, no that’s not a new theme or story in films.
But even though their storyline is not as exciting as it should have been, what sets the movie apart and comes off as a good watch is the extraordinary performances by the actors, especially by Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Coolidge.

While many people say age is just a number J Lo is the embodiment of that statement. The singer/actress who is currently 52 years old has displayed the best of her skills in comedy and has also shown off her martial arts talent. It is hard to believe that she is 52 years old now.
Even though J Lo looks stunning in the film for her age, the age of the actors is something that is pointed out as a negative for the film. While both, Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel look exceptionally good it’s hard to see them at the age at which they are portrayed in the movie.
The performance of the Golden Globe-winning actress Jennifer Coolidge is another major entertaining factor in the movie.
Just like most works, Coolidge has given her touch to the role of Carol Fowler, who is the mother of Tom. Known for her witty and quirky roles, Coolidge never fails o put a giggle on the audience’s face whenever she appears on the screen.
Shotgun Wedding Movie Review: Conclusion
As the movie was released through the OTT platform, there is no donut that the movie was able to generate a decent profit and as per the popular review website Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has received 44% positive reviews.
Even though there are some flaws to the movie as we mentioned, Shotgun Wedding is a good watch if you are looking for a film where you can just kick back and relax, without putting your head much into the film.
