Uber Breached By Hacker In Cybersecurity Incident

Uber confirmed on Thursday that it is investigating a cybersecurity incident following reports that a hacker breached its internal network.

According to a Private news site, the ride-hailing company discovered the intrusion on Thursday and has taken many internal communications and engineering systems offline while it investigates.

Uber told that it is investigating a cybersecurity incident and has contacted law enforcement, but they did not answer any further questions.

According to the Private news, the accused 18-year-old hacker behind the breach was able to penetrate Uber's system due to the company's lax security

Through social engineering, the attacker gained access to Uber's systems by compromising an employee's Slack account. Twilio, Mailchimp, and Okta have all been targeted with this strategy

On Thursday afternoon, shortly before the Slack system was taken offline, Uber employees received a message that read: “I announce I am a hacker and Uber has suffered a data breach”.

The attacker gained administrative access to Uber's AWS and GCP cloud services, where the company stores source code and user data, as well as its HackerOne bug bounty program.

Uber has previously been compromised. Hackers seized 57 million driver and rider accounts in 2016 and demanded $100,000 to remove Uber's copy.

Uber arranged the payments, but they remained silent about the security breach for more than a year.
