Tesla CEO Elon Musk Presents Humanoid Robot Optimus

Elon Musk unveiled the prototype for a humanoid robot named Optimus at Tesla's AI 2022 event in Silicon Valley on Friday.

The robot, which Musk hopes to sell for less than $20,000, is still in the works, but it might be ready for the public in "a few years."

After giving the audience a little wave to start the demo, a video was shown of Optimus watering plants, carrying boxes, and lifting metal bars to show what the robot could do.

Engineers say Musk hopes to test the robots at Tesla car factories once they're finished. "It'll be a fundamental transformation for civilization as we know it," Musk says.

"There's still a lot of work to be done to develop and prove Optimus," Musk stated, later adding that "Optimus is going to be great in five or ten years, like mind blowing."

According to the sources, coverage of Tesla's AI 2022 event, work on the Optimus prototype has advanced significantly since last year's event.

Optimus had no formal name in 2021 and was just referred to as "Tesla Bot."At previous year's event, a person in a robot suit was displayed to guests,whereas now there's an actual robot to present.

Tesla says Optimus can function all day on a "2.3kWh Tesla battery pack and 52V subsystem" compared to a human worker who uses "100W at rest and 500W while walking quickly."

Musk wrote on Twitter on Friday that "naturally there will  be a "Catgirl version" of the Optimus robot in the near future.
