Pay Raise 2023: How Many States To Increase Salaries Next Year?

On election day, voters in two states in the United States were given the opportunity to approve pay increases for workers.

This method, also known as ballot initiatives, gives the electorate the power to pass legislation without the support of the governor or state legislatures.

To put a measure to a vote, a particular number of voter signatures are needed. This is what occurred in Nebraska and DC.

Initiative Measure 433 passed in Nebraska with 59 percent support, raising the minimum wage from $9 to $10.50 in January. The new law raises the minimum wage by $1.50 annually until 2026.

In January, Initiative 82 will raise the DC minimum wage from $5.35 to $6. Six months later, it will reach $8, then $2 per year until 2027.

Despite President Joe Biden's pledge to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour, it has stayed at $7.25.

Senator Krysten Sinema was one of eight Democrats who voted against inserting the clause in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has pledged to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour, and Hawaii and Florida have voted in favour of the plan.

"Concerned folks are still struggling. Okay. I know it's been a challenging few years for many Americans "said President Biden.
