LA County Residents Ages 18-24-year Can Get $1,000 Monthly Payments

A select group of young Los Angeles County residents could receive $1,000 monthly payments for up to three years.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis announced on Wednesday the launch of a three-year guaranteed income pilot programme for 300 selected residents.

The programme helps 18- to 24-year-olds receiving county employment services through GROW.

"These young people have had to develop personal strength and resilience to overcome so many challenges in their lives.

Like us, they need a chance to use their talents. Guaranteed income could unlock their potential, Solis said.

The announcement comes just a few weeks after the county announced a guaranteed basic income programme for 1,000 selected residents.

The recipients of this version of the programme were chosen earlier this year from a pool of more than 180,000 applicants.

Given the number of applicants, it's clear that a guaranteed basic income is a good idea, said LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl.

"I'm confident we'll see what other pilots have shown: that a guaranteed basic income gives people and their families financial breathing room.
