The state said that taxpayers who are eligible will be able to use an online tool to find out if they will get the money.
On Monday, September 19, the Virginia Department of Taxation will have a lookup tool that you can use to see if you qualify.
In the beginning of this year, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law that lets taxpayers who owe money get a one-time direct payment.
Those residents of Virginia who owed money to the government for back taxes will be eligible to receive the payment.
Tax liability is the amount of tax you owe for the year minus any credits, deductions, or subtractions.
A person who filed as a single person will get up to $250 back. The rebate is worth up to $500 if you filed jointly.
The state of Virginia said that the rebates would be given out in the order that tax returns were turned in.
If you sent in your return by July 1, you should get your rebate check by October 17. It should be in your account by October 31.
If you owe more than your rebate, the state will send you a letter explaining how your rebate will be used to pay off your debt.
