$500 LIHWAP Checks: Eligibility & How To Apply?

LIHWAP helps low-income households pay for water and sewer services. The program can help households with past-due water/or sewer bills (arrears).

LIHWAP is a benefit based  on water and/or sewer arrears, up to $2,500 per water or sewer provider, or $5,000 if water and sewer are combined, per applicant household.

The household's water and/or sewer provider will get the benefits, which are paid directly to them.

On October 1, 2022, a new program year will begin, and households may be eligible for extra aid even if they've already received LIHWAP.


Eligibility and benefits are based on: -Income -Household size -Amount owed to water and/or sewer provider(s)

Applicants must submit the following documents: 1. Proof of identity for the primary applicant 2. A valid Social Security Number for the primary applicant


3. Proof of residence 4. A water, sewer, or combined water and sewer bill listing your permanent and primary residence 5. Documentation of income for the primary applicant
