More and more states in the United States and other parts of the world are now demanding that residents wear a mask in public. But even in stricter jurisdictions, there are vague guidelines for masking.

On Wednesday, New Jersey Governor Bill Murphy  ordered all Garden State residents to wear a mask in public but said this only applies when you can’t get away from others properly. In other words, wear a mask if you are in an area where others are.

So you may be scratching your head when you see masked men/women driving a car. Is it too much, and before I wonder, should I do it too?

The answer, unfortunately, is vague. Here’s what to take into account when wearing a mask in the car.

Are you driving alone?

If you’re the only person in your car, you don’t need to wear a face mask. After all, you are protected by the walls of your vehicle and more than six feet away from anyone else.

But if you have other people in the car with you, the answer is tricky. If your passenger does not live in your home and you have no idea who they were contacting in the last 14 days, you should all wear masks.

This is the same reason you wear a mask in a supermarket or office building. It protects others from inhaling droplets that can escape your mouth or nose.

Are the windows down?

Ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft have  been restarted with new, covariant-time safety guidelines. There is a need to keep the windows open so that germs do not get into the car. (Of course, another rule is that travellers and drivers must wear masks, for the above reasons).

However, if you are driving alone with your windows open, you may want to keep a mask. This is especially true if you are driving through residential areas that are close to pedestrians.

Is your vision clear?

In addition to these high safety precautions, it is imperative to keep your vision field clear while driving. If your face is blocked in any way, it is safe to remove it.

Use your judgment

Whether you are in the car, in the market, or your living room, use your judgment as to whether you should cover your face. At the end of the day, everyone is still learning according to the new norms of an epidemic society.

We must do all we can to follow safety precautions and understand that everyone is still embracing. There is no need to start a fight with those who are more concerned.
