Khabib Nurmagomedovknown as the greatest lightweight fighter in the UFC, is gearing up for UFC 280. The event will feature his cousin Islam Makhachev in the main event, battling for the vacant lightweight belt. Makhachev will face Charles Oliveira who is ranked no. 1 in the UFC 155lbs division.
The Eagle previously called the fight one dream fight. He said it equates to his fight against Tony Ferguson which never happened. Similar to this contest, no one wants to make a proper prediction on what may happen in this fight. Charles is an unpredictable fighter and never gives up easily.

Recently, some journalists met Nurmagomedov and asked him what he thought of Oliveira. Khabib certainly had some interesting comments on Do Bronx. Recently, Justin Gaethje said that Oliveira was the more powerful fighter he had ever faced. However, Khabib disagreed with this. Instead, he’s more concerned with Oliveira’s struggle.
“Oliveira has been around for a long time. When there’s someone on a good winning streak in your weight class, you start to see them as a potential opponent. Then you start thinking about what to do when you fight him. We have studied him closely and we continue to study him. He has a very good guillotine. You have to be careful, his body is made for that.
Khabib is confident of getting the job done on October 22. He wants Islam to focus on the game plan during the fight. Oliveira is a veteran fighter. It will therefore be important for Makhachev to stick to the drills during training sessions.
“As for his stand up – really good knees and kicks, kicks to the body and head. I wouldn’t say he’s strong, but he’s gained a lot of experience and confidence over the last few years. We are certainly not looking behind it, but we are confident that we will cross it. We just have to be careful, patient and stick to the game plan. (h/t via Khabib Nurmagomedov YouTube channel)
Can Islam Makhachev defeat Charles Oliveira at UFC 280?
As Khabib evaded in the interview, both fighters are on big winning streaks. While Islam is on a 10-fight winning streak, Oliveira has gone undefeated in the last 11 fights. So that shows just how confident both fighters will be heading into UFC 280.
Despite being the least experienced fighter, Islam is the favorite to win. Oliveira hasn’t faced a fighter recently who is primarily a wrestler. Almost all of his last opponents were attackers who used grappling as a last resort. But this time, Charles faces Makhachev who is the best wrestler in the division.
Although Oliveira has a great submission threat, he is a very technical grappler. But Makhachev, on the other hand, is both technically sound and possesses great power. Box Islam Makhachev use it to stifle the Brazilian and win? Fans will have the answer at UFC 280.
