KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA — In the first half of 2021, TikTok also ranked as the most downloaded and highest-grossing non-game app overall, according to a recent report from analytics firm Sensor Tower (https://sensortower.com/ ).

  • Tiktok was the most downloaded non-game app in the first half of 2021.
  • As reported by Sensor Tower, TikTok’s use accelerated in the first half of 2021 as well.

Data from Sensor Tower shows the app reached nearly 383 million first-time users worldwide and raked in nearly $919.2 million in consumer spending in the first half of 2021.

Its app is now available in 3 billion locations globally, including the App Store and Google Play (if you exclude third-party Android marketplaces), a milestone that Sensor Tower describes as being achieved by no other non-Facebook app.

According to TikTok, the total number of installations in the US is approximately 253 million so far, which represents 8.4% of the number of installations globally.

There are just five apps that have ever reached 3 billion downloads worldwide from the App Store and Google Play, the others being Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

Sensor Tower reports that although TikTok downloads fell 38% from nearly 619m in the first half of 2020, which they partly attribute to the app’s ban in India, consumer spending (in-app spending) actually increased 73%.

In Q2, TikTok’s consumer spending was $534.6m, up from $384.7m in the previous quarter (Q1 2021). This is the company’s highest quarter-on-quarter increase since Q2 2020.

Globally, TikTok has generated more than $2.5 billion in consumer spending since its launch, according to Sensor Tower.

Sensor Tower reported that TikTok is one of only five non-game apps to earn more than $2 billion in revenue, along with Tinder, Netflix, YouTube, and Tencent Video.

In addition, Sensor Tower reports increased TikTok usage in the first half of 2021.

As of Q1 2021, first-time downloads were up 2% quarter-over-quarter, while first-time installations were up 16% to 205.4 million.

The growth in Q2 was the most the app has seen since it accumulated more than 315 million installs in Q1 2020, which was a record-breaking quarter for any app.

TikTok’s metrics indicate impressive growth, but do not mean that it stands alone in the social video category, according to Sensor Tower.

Despite tremendous growth, Sensor Tower notes, “TikTok doesn’t stand alone in the social video space”.

As a result, apps such as Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram have added similar functionality to their platforms, hoping to lure new and existing users.

While a number of competitors, including Kwai and Moj, are also vying for market supremacy, ByteDance will continue to innovate and expand the TikTok creator ecosystem to stay relevant.
