What Is Parler? A Guide To Use The App

by Mark L Mojica

Parler App- Guide To Use

You may have heard about Parler. However, what is it and how does it vary from other, more well-known social networking platforms?

Parler is an alternative social media network that has gained attention following controversies over social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter detecting false information or excluding users for breaking platform rules.

Parler is a social media platform, which was established in 2018, and describes itself as a “free speech-driven” environment. The app has primarily drawn US conservatives who disapprove of the restrictions on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter over the content.

According to Sensor Tower data, Parler has received 10.8 million installs worldwide from the App Store and Google Play, with 8.7 million of those installs coming from the United States.

Parler

It claimed to have more than 15 million registered users in January. Trump does not have a verified Parler account, but his “Team Trump” campaign does. Trump was last week immediately suspended from Twitter as a result of social media platforms cracking down on his accounts.

To enforce its community rules based on “fair and legitimate legal precedent,” Parler does have what it refers to as a “Community Jury.” It’s unclear though, exactly how this jury functions in practice. According to its terms and conditions of service, Parler also has the right “at any time for any reason” to delete a user’s content or to ban them from the platform.

Users of the website can choose from a wide range of tools to manage the content they see. This includes excluding articles with specific keywords or barring users.

How To Create A Parler Account

Creating an account in Parler must be done through its website. You can register for a Parler account by clicking the “create new account” button on the right side of the page. The “create new account” button will direct you to the signup pages. You can fill out the details there according to the instructions and finally the account will be created.

How To Use Parler

You can follow other users’ feeds using the “feed me” tool, and they can add posts from other users to your feed using the “echo” option. Twitter and Parler share similar properties. As well, direct messaging is also supported by Parler.

Without any spaces in your search terms, you don’t seem to be able to find any accounts because searches are dependent on how many followers the user has.

You can upload videos from Youtube as well as images and GIFs to the website. However, the vast majority of individuals we came across while using the service primarily provided links to other websites.

Early on in the site’s development, the profile included badges and a system of points for community involvement with a user’s material that was fairly clear and similar to Twitter Analytics. These functionalities were eliminated from the website during an upgrade, simplifying their user experience.

Who Found Parler?

In August 2018, John Matze and Jared Thomson, two software developers from Nevada together with Rebekah Mercer, established Parler. The phrase “Parler” which means to speak in French, served as the inspiration for the firm name.

Although Parler was established in 2018 as a conservative social network, the service lacked initial success. However, it experienced a surge in new users when Twitter labeled ex-president Trump’s remarks as containing misinformation.

Many rightwing figures who wanted to use their right to free speech-basically, the ability to post without checks- had been doing so. It also developed into a shelter for people who wanted to stay away from racist far-right forums.

A few days after the tragic attack on a federal building in the United States on January 6, 2021, Google withdrew the Parler app from its play store because it contained “obscene content” that may have incited the violence.

Later, in September 2022, Google finally allowed the conservative-friendly social networking platform Parler back to its Play Store. Now the app is available in both the Play store and Apple Store.
